Brian Waite was born in Grantham and was educated at the local King's School and at Loughborough College of Physical Education. Following a decade teaching in Kent, he was commissioned into the Royal Air Force. He commanded 609 (WR) Squadron as a Reservist, where he 'found' William. He is married to Louise and lives in North Yorkshire.
