Alongside Tate Modern's big Strindberg Exhibition this Spring - his two most famous plays are published in the popular pocket-format Drama Classics series Recently revived in the West End with Ian McKellen and Frances de la Tour, The Dance of Death is Strindberg's chilling anatomy of a marriage - in which the two partners duel with each other until one is utterly defeated. Written in 1902 and consisting of two full-length plays, both are included in this volume, though usually only the first is staged.

August Strindberg (1849-1912) is best-known for his misogyny and as the author of Miss Julie (1889). His first success came as a novelist and autobiographer. His plays (and he wrote over sixty) were deeply controversial in their time and still are to some extent. They range form bold naturalism (e.g. The father, 1887) to an entralling expressionism (e.g. The Ghost Sonata, 1907).
