AS Music Harmony Workbook - Softcover

This book is designed for the new GCE AS Music specification to be examined from 2009 onwards, although it also provides a firm foundation for all students embarking on a study of harmony. Dr Benham doesnt presume that students will begin their studies for AS Music with a detailed knowledge of either music notation or harmony. He begins by carefully explaining matters such as the bass clef, intervals, and how chords are formed, before going on to discuss cadences, other harmonic progressions and part-writing. Topics are illustrated with examples from a broad range of musical styles and include frequent activities by which students can test their understanding. There is step-by-step guidance on the principal tasks required in AS Music harmony tests, with examples, tips, clear explanations of technical terminology, and carefully graded exercises provided for practice. The A2 Music Harmony Workbook is a sequel to this book for those continuing with their studies.

Hugh Benham read Music and English at Southampton University, where he was awarded a Ph.D. for his study of the music of John Taverner. He is a chair of examiners for GCE Music, an in-service trainer, church organist, and writer, and formerly taught music in a sixth-form college. Hugh has contributed to Music Teacher and Classroom Music magazines, and is the author of Baroque Music in Focus (Rhinegold, 2007). His other writing includes two books on English church music, including John Taverner: his Life and Music (Ashgate, 2003), articles on early music, contributions to The New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians (2001) and Die Musik in Geschichte und Gegenwart, and a complete edition of Taverner for Early English Church Music.
