Born in 1924, into a middle-class Derbyshire family, Meg Manly looks back with affection and amusement to a time, between the two world wars, when growing up was very different from today. Over the events and experiences which she recalls so vividly – travelling by tram, the drowning of the wind-up gramophone, the pet dog who loved ice-cream, the dreaded children’s parties and the teacher who ate jelly with a knife and fork – hang the shadows of the 1930’s depression, which saw her father lose the family business, and the outbreak of World War II. Meg’s memories take us through those wartime years up to her marriage and the birth of her son as we come to the end of what is, hopefully, only the first part of her “meanderings” journey.
