Biographies of Florenese musical..: 347 (Bulletin S.) - Softcover

The Tropenmuseum possesses a unique music collection from Flores, Eastern Indonesia. The more than 300 musical instruments, 350 musical recordings; 300 photographs and slides were collected and documented by the renowned ethnomusicologist Jaap Kunst in the 1930s, by his student, the SVD Missionary Pe Rozing in the 1950s-1960s, and by the present author Paula Bos (at the time a student of cultural anthropology) in 1994.
This bulletin analyses the processes of fieldwork and collecting used by these three researchers. Their collections are compared from the viewpoint of the 'biography of objects'; the musical instruments (illustrated by 26 photographs and 67 drawings) are considered in the light of social change in Florenese society and musical culture.
