Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. The Queen of Spades and Other Stories is a collection of short fiction showcasing Alexander Pushkin's application of Romantic sensibilities to uncompromising studies of human frailty. This Penguin Classics edition is translated with an introduction by Rosemary Edwards. 'The Queen of Spades', one of Pushkin's most popular and chilling short stories, tells of an inveterate card player who develops a dangerous obsession with the secret of an old lady's luck, which he believes will bring him the wealth he craves. 'The Negro of Peter the Great', a story based on the life Pushkin's own great-grandfather, is a vivid depiction - and criticism - of both French and Russian society, while 'Dubrovsky' is the Byronic tale of a dispossessed young officer. 'The Captain's Daughter' tells of a young man sent to military service - based on the actual events of the rebellion against Catherine II, it demonstrates Pushkin's unparalleled skill at blending fiction and history. Together these four stories display the versatility and innovation that earned Pushkin his reputation as a master of prose and established him as the towering figure in Russian literature. Rosemary Edmonds's translation is accompanied by an introduction examining Pushkin's simplicity of style and the powerful influence he exerted on his country's literature. Alexander Pushkin (1799-1837) was born in Moscow in 1799. Leaving school in 1817, he spent three years in St Petersburg working in the Foreign Office and writing erotic verse. His flirtations with pre-Decembrist movements and his revolutionary verses lead to his exile in 1820. After a stay in the Caucasus and Crimea he was sent to Bessarabia, where he began to write more seriously, beginning Eugene Onegin and Tsygany. In 1831 he retired to a family estate, married, and his literary output slackened. He was mortally wounded in a duel and died in January 1837. If you enjoyed The Queen of Spades, you might like Fyodor Dostoyevsky's The Idiot, also available in Penguin Classics. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Paperback. Zustand: Good. Shortlisted for the Booker International Prize. Like John Williams' Stoner or Denis Johnson's Train Dreams, A Whole Life by Robert Seethaler is a tender book about finding dignity and beauty in solitude. An exquisite novel about a simple life, it has already demonstrated its power to move thousands of readers with a message of solace and truth. It looks at the moments, big and small, that make us what we are. Andreas lives his whole life in the Austrian Alps, where he arrives as a young boy taken in by a farming family. He is a man of very few words and so, when he falls in love with Marie, he doesn't ask for her hand in marriage, but instead has some of his friends light her name at dusk across the mountain. When Marie dies in an avalanche, pregnant with their first child, Andreas' heart is broken. He leaves his valley just once more, to fight in WWII where he is taken prisoner in the Caucasus and returns to find that modernity has reached his remote haven . . . 'It is at once heart-rending and heart-warming. A Whole Life, for all its gentleness, is a very powerful book.' - Jim Crace, author of Harvest. The book has been read but remains in clean condition. All pages are intact and the cover is intact. Some minor wear to the spine.

Buch
Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. A spellbinding yarn set a thousand years ago along the ancient Silk Road, by the Pulitzer Prize-winning author of The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay 'It's been a while since I had such fun reading a book' Daily Telegraph 'Readers might feel they have reached the book equivalent of the Promised Land' The Times GENTLEMEN OF THE ROAD is set in the Kingdom of Arran, in the Caucasus Mountains, between the Black Sea and the Caspian Sea, A.D. 950. It tells the tale of two wandering adventurers and unlikely soulmates, variously plying their trades as swords for hire, horse thieves and con artists - until fortune entangles them in the myriad schemes and battles that follow a bloody coup in the medieval Jewish empire of the Khazars. Hired as escorts for a fugitive prince, they quickly find themselves half-willing generals in a mad rebellion, struggling to restore the prince's family to the throne. As their increasingly outrageous exploits unfold, they encounter a wondrous elephant, wily Rhadanite tradesmen, whores, thieves, soldiers, an emperor, and discover the truth about their young royal charge. Beautifully illustrated throughout, this is a novel brimming with raucous humour and cliff-hanging suspense, combining the spirit of The Arabian Nights with the action of The Three Musketeers. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. This study identifies and analyzes the extent to which the transition economies of Central Europe, Russia, Central Asia and the Caucasus are likely to attract inward foreign direct investment (FDI) at the start of the new century and beyond. Although these countries have been growing recipients of FDI, multinationals have, to date, been slow to commit large investment sums. The book assembles a group of established and internationally respected contributors, whose objective is to draw out common characteristics and problems which the East European countries share, and which are likely to influence their economic strategies, both nationally and internationally. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. The West is losing the 'war on terror'. Not only have we been slow in attending to the globalisation of the Jihad movement - from Indonesia to the Caucasus and from Pakistan to Western Europe - we have also been stoking the fire. The allied invasion of Iraq has turned that long-suffering country into a melting pot for terrorism - terrorism that, with the help of the Internet and the proliferation of small self-starter cells, is spreading with frightening speed across the globe. This provocative and engaging book is the first to examine the London bombings, to point to where the danger is growing and to show how America's tendency to frame the conflict in religious terms, as a fight between good and evil, is leading us towards disaster. But THE NEXT ATTACK also offers a new strategy for mutual survival between the East and West in the twenty-first century.THE NEXT ATTACK is essential reading for our age. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Buch
Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. Get us out of red darkness! The impassioned plea was scrawled on a protester's placard. The Soviet empire forged by Lenin and Stalin was disintegrating. The communist ruling class fought to hang on to power, priviledge and lucrative links with crime - and to hide the atrocities of the past. The huge Soviet army was riven by discontent while rumours of a coup fuelled the sense of collapse. As a foreign correspondent Trevor Fishlock lived and travelled widely in the Soviet Union, in Siberia and Samarkand, in the Caucasus and Baltic lands. He saw how Gorbachev's attempts at reform unleashed one of the great dramas of the 20th century, the fall of communism and its empire. Here is a dramatic picture of astonishing events - when history seemed to be written on lava. It is also the story of ordinary people in extraordinary times, making a life as best they can as old certainties vanish and queues for food and clothing lengthen. The narrative chronicles the first flowers springing up through Soviet concrete, cracking it apart. It describes the horror as troops try to smash rebellion and reimpose the rule of fear. The author finally journeys to free countries blinking in the post-communism dawn as tryants' statues fall. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.
