Erstausgabe
First edition. Complete. Printed in only 5,000 copies. In publisher's photographic folder. 145 105 mm. One of the earliest publications about Chelyuskin. A collection of 34 photographic postcards, with images showing the episodes of the Chelyuskin expedition, the Arctic voyage of the steamship that stuck in ice, the rescue of the passengers and crew by airplane, and the celebration of their homecoming. The story became one of the most glorified events in 1930s Stalinist Russia, and it was mythologized as much as the British expeditions of Shackleton and Scott. The official professional photographers and cameramen of the expedition were Petr Novitzky, and Arkadi Shafran (1907-1983), who also made a film about the event (Chelyuskin, Heroes of the Arctic; 1934). Some of the photos were also used in the famous photo book "Geroicheskaia Epopeia" published by the Pravda in 1935. The steamship Chelyuskin with the leader of the expedition Otto Yuliyevich Shmidt, the captain Vladimir Ivanovich Voronin, the crew and about hundred of passengers on board started its mission from Murmansk, in August 1933. The expedition's task was to determine the possibility to travel by non-icebreaker through the Northern Maritime Route in a single navigation season. In September 1933 the ship got stuck in pack ice in the Chukchi Sea near Kolyuchin Island and after an unsuccessful rescue attempt by an icebreaker, on 13 February 1934, Chelyuskin was crushed by ice. The members of the expedition managed to escape and landed on a drifting ice floe where they built a makeshift airstrip. The Soviet government had taken measures to rescue people by airplanes thus between March 5 and April 13, 1934 all passengers and crew were evacuated, and in June together with the hero-pilots, led by Anatoly Liapidevsky and Sigizmund Levanevsky arrived to Vladivostok. All passengers of Chelyuskin were awarded medals and the pilots were first in the country to be awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union. Despite the failure of the expedition the Soviets considered it successful, as it had proven that an ordinary cargo vessel could voyage through the North-East Passage in one season, thus the Northern Sea Route was officially opened and commercial exploitation began in 1935. Rare, we could not trace any complete set in institutional holdings worldwide. [Bibl.: Parr, M.; Badger, G.: The Photobook: A History. London: Phaidon, 2004. Vol. 1. p. 164.] . Folder artistically restored. Price on cover in ink. In very good condition. The postcards are in mint condition. In publisher's photographic folder First edition. Complete. Printed in only 5,000 copies.

Softcover. Zustand: g+. First edition. Square 12mo. 93pp. [3]. Illustrated grey stiff paper wrappers, with blue and black lettering on the front cover. A first edition of this masterpiece work of avant-garde Russian poetry from Mikhail Kuzmin (1872-1936). The eleventh and final book of poetry from Kuzmin, divided into six parts, it has been seen as marking a new direction in the poet's work and a departure from Russian literary tradition. Based on the principles of free association and dream logic, the style of this work has been noted to be influenced by surrealism, cinema, and Freudian thought. The poems contain homoerotic elements, occult influences and coded references to the author's personal life. The modernist front cover was designed by Russian poet Vladislav Khodasevich (1886-1939). Text in Russian. Wrappers with some light smudges and stains. Minor rubbing to extremities. Interior with sporadic minor to light water stains and/or smudges throughout. Book block tight. Third Russian edition. Third Russian edition. In publisher's printed wrappers. 134 p. Tolstoy finished the novella in late 1889 and the story was recited for public in a friends publishing house, but it was obvious that the Russian censorship would not allow the story to be published. Only a few hundreds of clandestine mimeograph (hectograph) copies of the handwritten text were circulated in Russia. In 1890 the German publishing house the "Bibliographic Office in Berlin" (B. Berg) published the story first in four languages (Russian, German, French and English) simultaneously. The second Russian edition was published the same year and the third edition in 1891. Extremely rare and very early edition. . Spine with blue vignette, slight rubbed. Front cover creased at lower corner. Trace of white vignette on inner rear cover. Overall a good copy. Softcover. Zustand: poor to good+. Second edition. Folio. [3] 38pp. [9]. Original illustrated gray wrappers with red lettering on the front cover. Three illustrated title pages. Compiled and recorded by Ekaterina Alekseevna Cherkasskaya (1825-1888) and Baroness Varvara Sergeevna Plessen (1825-1893), this extremely scarce work is a collection of Russian lullabies, nursery rhymes, and children's songs of the 19th century. Both women were members of the Russian aristocracy of the period. As stated opposite the title page, the work is dedicated to Russian children and features delightful b/w engraved illustrations throughout by French artist Georges Gimbel (George Gimbel, ca.1840- ca.1890). The final 8 pages contain sheet music for 9 songs (with musical notation, lyrics and illustration), some of which was composed by "E.N. Zh-oy", and some of which was taken by her from previously existing melodies. We have not been able to determine the composer's identity, but the text states she is female. The first edition of the work is believed to have been published the previous year, also in Strasbourg, although information on this collection is extremely scant. There are no noted copies of either edition of this extremely scarce work on OCLC worldwide, although there are a few references to an existing copy in the Russian State Archives, and it is not known how many copies were ever printed. Pre-Revolutionary era Russian children's books with sheet music where quite uncommon, and it is interesting to observe that the majority of the contributors to this work were women. Text throughout in Russian. Wraps frayed along edges with chips and light creasing, back cover detached but present. Spine mostly missing. Some foxing in margins not affecting images. Images mostly still clean and vibrant. Wraps in overall poor, interior in good+ condition overall. Wrappers protected in modern mylar. Extremely scarce.
