Softcover. Zustand: vg- to vg+. First edition. Large quarto. Unpaginated (10 pages). Chromolithographic yellow and green illustrated wrappers, with black lettering on the front cover. This scarce work is a Russian translation of the popular children's fairytale "Die Geschichte von dem Kleinen Muck" (The Story of Little Muck) by German author Wilhelm Hauff (1802-1827), with chromolithographic illustrations by Russian artist Dimitry Mitrohin (1883-1973). This story is set in a town in Turkey, and concerns the adventures of an ostracized little man name Muck. The work reflects the author's orientalist proclivities, and was originally published as part of Hauff's collection of fairy tails "'Fairytale Almanac of 1826". Here Mitrohin provides beautifully printed chromolithographs to accompany the text, ranging from smaller historiated initials and tailpieces to nearly full page images, influenced by art nouveau and middle-eastern styles. All images containing the artist's signature, at the corner. Pages printed on textured paper. A previous owner has translated the content into German, handwritten in ink on small sheets of lined paper, laid in. This is one of hundreds of Russian children's works published during the period by the acclaimed art publisher Joseph (Iosif) Knebel (1854-1926). This work is one 9 books illustrated by Mitrohin from the Knebel "Gift Series", published in 1906-1918. Text in Russian. Wrappers with a few small ink stains near the edges of the covers. A few minor water stains at the bottom of the first two pages, but all pages otherwise quiet clean, with vibrant color. Wrappers in very good, interior in very good+ condition overall. Alternate transliteration: Mitrokhin Dimitry Mitrohin (1883-1973) was a prominent Russian illustrator, graphic designer, master engraver, teacher, and art critic. He artistic education included studying at the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture as well as the Stroganov Art School, and studying drawing under art Nouveau figures such as Eugne Grasset and Thophile Steinlen, in Paris.

20pp. 8vo. First Edition. First Edition. 20pp. 8vo. Tolstoy's most forceful essay puts forth a powerful moral vision for art as a necessary part of human experience. He began thinking about it when his daughter, Tanya, became a student at Academy of Painting, Sculpture, and Architecture in 1881. It took him fifteen years to write it, and was published nearly simultaneously in Russia and in England (translated by Alymer Maude, whose Tolstoy correspondence provides a good source for Tolstoy's battles with the censors in Russia). "His first effort in this direction, in 1882, left him entirely unconvinced. And over the next fifteen years, during various periods of time, he struggled with the subject, defining and redefining his position. In all his theorizing, however, one can detect a growing emphasis upon the ethical principle as the immanent organizing factor in the artistic process. And this view ultimately became the starting point for the aesthetic theory that he finally elaborated in What Is Art? The growing popularity of such movements as Decadence and Symbolism during the last decade of the nineteenth century offended both his artistic and his moral sense and provided him with a new impetus to finish his book on art. He worked almost exclusively on it through a large part of 1897 and finished it in December." (Simmons, Ernest, "Leo Tolstoy: The Later Years," The Atlantic, Aug. 1946). "What is art?" is one of Tolstoy's most important non-fiction works, a philosophical statement concerning the morality of art, and one of the most important and controversial aesthetic credos ever written. Bernard Shaw, in his review of this essay, says "Tolstoy's main point . . . is the establishment of his definition of art. It is, he says, 'an activity by means of which one man, having experienced a feeling, intentionally transmits it to others,'" and that "this book of his will not be valued for its specific criticisms, some of which, if truth be told, represent nothing but the inevitable obsolecence of an old man's taste in art." The final published version was actually relatively mild when compared with some of Tolstoy's diary entries on the subject of art of that period. But although his full fury was "mutilated by the censor, [when it] came out at the beginning of 1898, it aroused a storm of protest. Most artists were simply dismayed by this profession of faith by the most illustrious author in Russia, confusing art with pedagogy and talent with right-mindedness. . . . Tolstoy was not displeased by this commotion. If they were all shouting so loudly then he must have hit the mark" (Troyat, pp. 556-557). Rare, we locate no copies at auction, and only a couple in OCLC. Printed wrappers, fragile, front wrapper starting, rear wrapper detached, spine mostly perished. In blue cloth dropbox.

Hardcover. Zustand: poor to vg. Limited First edition. 1/1000. Folio.157, [1]pp. Original printed dust-jacket over half green cloth and decorative paper covered boards. Pictorial endpapers. Decorative head-, tailpieces, and initials. Lavishly illustrated with 101 duo-tone photographic reproductions mounted onto heavy paper, this handsome volume documents the amazing true story of a wealthy family's contribution to the arts and architecture in a little town of northern Russia. Solvychegodsk is located on the north bank of the Vychegda River not far from its confluence with the Northern Dvina. Despite its sleepy appearance, Solvychegodsk contains two of the most elaborate examples of religious architecture and applied arts in all Russia. Founded in the 14th century, Solvychegodsk was called the Stroganov town due to the rich local salt works owned by the Stroganov family. The family created a salt monopoly which brought them enormous wealth, and Solvychegodsk became the center of a private empire. The family's achievements placed them in positions of exceptional influence, both political and cultural. The family's lavish patronage of the arts started with the patriarch of the dynasty, Anika (Ioanniky) Stroganov (1497-1570), whose primary contribution to Russian architecture is the Annunciation Cathedral, begun in 1560 and apparently concluded in the early 1570s. The Cathedral contains a grandiose gilded iconstasis, which was carved in Moscow by a team led by Grigori Ivanov and transported here in 1693. The origins of the famed Stroganoff school of iconography and the decorative arts can be seen here in opulent examples of enamel, painting and other applied arts on display in the cathedral. Another architectural jewel built by the Stroganov family is the Presentation Cathedral whose soaring interior is created by a vaulting system of paired arches that support the large structure and its five cupolas. The magnificent icons within the Presentation Cathedral were painted on canvas (instead of treated boards) in a western style by a Stroganov painter, Stepan Narykov. The striking photographs depict in detail all these splendors (exterior and interior views of all the brick churches, as well as frescoes, icons, and other artwork), including some which were later destroyed by the Soviets. Written before the Bolshevik Revolution, and published in its immediate aftermath, this book is the last remaining testimony of the town's architectural and artistic jewels. Indeed, the Soviet period would inflict much damage on the cultural heritage of Solvychegodsk. Of the town's twelve brick churches at the beginning of the 20th century, eight were destroyed and two others left in ruined state. However, the two Stroganov cathedrals still stand in their monumental glory. One of 1000 numbered copies, of which this is No. 887. Dust-jacket partly creased and torn along edges. Head of spine slightly age-toned. Minor soiling along edges of covers. Text in Russian. DJ in overall poor to fair, binding in good+, interior in very good condition.

First Hungarian edition. Lampel's vignette on cover. In publisher's wrappers, printed in green. (9), 6-42 p., (14 [pages of advertisement of the publisher, printed by Jaroslav Pospešil in Prague; and (8) p. advertisement of "Album. Bibliothek deutscher Originalromane".]). First Hungarian edition, early translation of one of the earliest Slavonic language writings "The Tale of Igor's Campaign". Translated by the Hungarian historian and linguist Szende Riedl (1831-1873) after the German edition. Riedl was an expert on the historical connections between the Slavs and the Hungarians, thus he found the story of Igor's campaign against the Polovtsians particularly important to be translated and introduced to the Hungarian public. The identity between the Polovtsians and the Cumans was recently proven by Riedl's colleague Jnos Jerney, who even stated that their language was Hungarian and were the ancestors of the Hungarians. Riedl explains the importance of the text and its context in the ten-page foreword, that followed by the translation and the notes. "The Tale of Igor's Campaign" is one of the oldest Slavonic language text, a medieval epic poem from the late 12th century about the unsuccessful campaign of Prince Igor Svyatoslavich, prince of the Russian lands of Novgorod-Seversky against the Polovtsians (or Cumans). The tale was written anonymously around 1185 and its only manuscript, dated to the 15th century, was discovered in 1795 by Aleksei Musin-Pushkin and burned during Napoleon's invasion of Russia in 1812. Musin-Pushkin published the text in 1800 with the help of Alexei Malinovsky and Nikolai Bantysh-Kamensky, leading Russian paleographers of the time. It was first published in German in 1803 and in 1858 in Hungarian. Scarce, we could trace only three copies in institutional holdings worldwide. . Artistically restored. In very good condition. Hardcover. First edition. Oblong Octavo (6 1/2 x 9 3/4''). Unpaginated (20 leaves). The original printed light green front and back wrappers have been laid down onto later green buckram boards. Black lettering on front cover. The graphic and disturbing images in this volume are the earliest published photographic documentation of Nazi medical crimes and experiments perpetrated at Auschwitz, and were ultimately submitted as evidence to the International Criminal Court to be used by the prosecution at the infamous Nuremberg Trials. Originally shot at the concentration camp of Auschwitz-Birkenau upon its liberation, the photographs were taken by forensic experts from the Central Forensic Laboratory of the Main Military Medical Directorate of the USSR Armed Forces under supervision of the forensic expert N. I. Gerasimov, of the central forensic laboratory of the Main Medical Directorate of the USSR Armed Forces, between 1944 and 1945. This visual documentation was gathered as part of the materials of the larger and historically important Soviet "Extraordinary State Commission" (ChGK) first initiated to document Nazi atrocities starting in 1942. This specific material was submitted to the Nuremberg Trials as the second section of a two-part report on the subject of Auschwitz, admitted to evidence as the file titled "File H-1476: USSR No.30" *. We have not been able to locate any additional individual records for our printed version of this visual report worldwide. The forty-four photographs taken of former Auschwitz prisoners are all captioned in Russian, including name, age, nationality (Italy, Hungary, France, Czechoslovakia, Romania, Austria, Poland, USSR/Ukraine, and Thessaloniki), diagnosis and severity of respective illness. Twenty seven photographic images included here show surviving inmates who are diagnosed with alimentary dystrophy (starvation) in various stages, with additional information on other secondary illnesses such as edemas, frostbite (with additional comment "exposed to frost without shoes as a measure of punishment), hemorrhages, whooping cough, partial paralysis, bullet wounds, and scars from torture or experiments. In addition seventeen photographs document cases of castration (left-sided or bilateral) after irradiation with X-rays for the purpose of experimental sterilization, hormonal disorders from excess of fat deposition, neutered, artificially developed pigment spots and ulcers due experimentation. Text throughout in Russian. Very light staining on covers, front cover along spine, back cover along top half, and some minor smudges in lower foredge corners of some pages, not affecting images. Subtitle: "The documentation by the Emergency State Commission provides material to investigate and establish the atrocities committed by the Nazi invaders and their accomplices, and the damage they caused to citizens, collective farms, public organizations, state enterprises and institutions of the USSR" (aka the Extraordinary State Commission or ChGK). The Commission was established in 1942 and dissolved in 1947. This series of reports were ordered to "take full account of the villainous crimes of the Nazis and the damage they caused to Soviet citizens and the socialist state, to establish the identity of German fascist criminals aiming to bring them to trial and severe punishment. Approximately 7,000,000 Soviet citizens had participated in the collection of materials and evidence. The first 27 reports published by ChGK constituted the majority of Soviet evidentiary material at the Nuremberg Trials. *All the material submitted to by the Commission is now archived in the International Archives from Nuremberg held at the International Court of Justice. For reference, the digitized images can be viewed under the title "International Archives Nuremberg from the International Court of Justice, the Hague" via The United States Holocaust Memorial Museum (Accession Number: 2019.401.1 | RG Number: RG-41.024) / Subseries 5: Exhibits, USSR / File H-1476: USSR No.30 ("Camp Auschwitz"), and Stanford as well. The first section of that file is comprised of a broad survey of Auschwitz at the time of its liberation, including images of the dead, survivors, memorial services and a layout of the camp. The second part of the material, deals exclusively with the medical experiments. Our bound volume (which is complete in itself) represents a printed and slightly modified version of only that second portion of the material in that file. Upon comparison, in terms of size and order, it should be noted that the layout of the images on the pages of our printed copy is slightly different in some cases from the scanned documents. Our copy appears to have been trimmed in the margins (not affecting content). Like the printed version, the original scanned material includes the same images, with the same printed captions, however added are typescript notes in Cyrillic, in the margins from those involved in the Soviet Commission, along with the official ink stamp of the commission. A different bibliographic source for the larger group of Soviet Material submitted at the Nuremberg trails, refers to it as "USSR-8 Report of the Extraordinary State Commission on crimes in Auschwitz, Nazi death camps." Very good+ to near fine condition.
Verlag: Rossiyskaya sotsial-demokraticheskaya rabochaya partiya, Paris, 1911
Erstausgabe
First edition. Complete run. Text in Russian. 8; 30, (2) [blank]; 26 p. Scarce, complete set of all three issues of Diskussionny Listok, the bulletin of the Russian Social Democratic Labour Party published in Paris in 1910-1911. With three articles by Lenin published here first. The first two issues of the newspaper, published on March 19 (March 6 O.S.) and June 7 (May 25 O.S.), 1910, contains the first edition of Lenin's important article, Notes of a Publicist. In the first part of the article, published in the first issue of the bulletin, he discusses his views on the unity of the Party. In his writing, he also criticises the party's minority, including writer Maxim Gorky who later brought Lenin to book for his article. Lenin replied Gorky in a private letter, sent from Paris in April 1910: "Did I criticise you, and where? It must have been in Diskussionny Listok No. 1. I am sending you a copy. If this is not what your informants had in mind, then I don't remember anything else at the moment. I wrote nothing else during that period." (Lenin, 1974. Vol. 34. p 419.) In the final part of Notes of a Publicist, which appeared in the second issue of Diskussionny Listok, Lenin continues his discussion about the unification of the Russian socialist democrats and polemics against Leon Trotsky and the Bund. The third issue of the bulletin, published on May12, (April29 O.S.) 1911, includes the first edition of The Historical Meaning of the Inner-Party Struggle in Russia, Lenin's response to the calumnious articles of Trotsky and Martov published in the magazineNeue Zeit, the organ of the German Social-Democrats. Lenin originally intended to answer Trotsky and Martov in the same magazine, but the editors Karl Kautsky and Emanuel Wurm rejected to publish his article. This third issue also contains A Conversation Between a Legalist and an Opponent of Liquidationism, Lenin's article in which he attempted to convince Nikolai Aleksandrovich Rozhkov about the incorrectness of his liquidationist plan for the creation of a legal labour party under the Stolypin regime. Diskussionny Listok (Discussion Bulletin) was an important journal of the Russian Social Democratic Labour Party (RSDLP), launched in accordance with the decision taken by the January 1910 Plenary Meeting of the Central Committee of the party. Its editorial board included the representatives of the Bolsheviks, Mensheviks, Bundists, and Plekhanovites as well as of Polish and Latvian Social-Democratic organisations. It was published irregularly in Paris from March 19 (March 6 O.S.), 1910 to May12, (April29 O.S.) 1911 as a supplement to Sotsial-Demokrat, the Central Organ of RSDLP. Erstausgabe
Softcover. Zustand: vg to near fine. First edition. Quarto. 8pp. of text + 8 plates. Green printed wrappers with black lettering on the front cover. Pages un-opened. A scarce and obscure publication detailing the Jewish tombstones found at the archeological site of the ancient Greek city of Phangoria. The publication contains 8 pages of text followed by 8 plates of b/w illustrated figures, reproducing the content of the ancient graves. Founded circa 543 BC, Phangoria was located on the Taman Penninsula, in what is now Krasnodar Krai, in southern Russia, across the Strait of Kerch from Crimea. At its height, city served has the main and most important trading hub between the areas North of the Sea of Azov, and the areas on the southern coast of the Black Sea. Excavations at the site starting in the early 19th century revealed that the site contained a vast necropolis surrounding the city. Among the interesting revelations of these excavations, there appeared what were believed to be Jewish grave sites, dating to at least the first centuries AD. This is a striking reminder of the spread of Jewish people and culture around vast areas of the world, beyond the borders of Judea and the the eastern Mediterranean, providing important insight into this period of ancient Jewish history. There has been some doubt cast on the legitaimacy of these claims, in the years since. Text in Russian. Wrappers with minor rubbing to extremities, and a few small smudges to the front cover. Small ink stamp with pen markings of a previous owner on the back cover. Wrappers in very good, interior in near fine condition overall. Extremely scarce.
