From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - A good and clean copy. - From the text: The Onos (Loúkios i Ónos) is generally regarded as an epitome of the no-longer extant Metamorphoses which Photius attributed to Lucius of Patrae. Preserved among the writings of Lucian but probably a pseudepigraph, the Onos contains two passages which may help in determining the date and identity of the author of the Metamorphoses. - Wikipedia: Gerald Michael Browne (1943 - 30 August 2004) was professor emeritus of classics at the University of Illinois. In the course of the last complete Isthmian, the genuine textual evidence shrinks to a single manuscript, which we designate as D. The manuscript gives an unquestionably corrupt reading in the poem s last line. Sprache: Englisch Gewicht in Gramm: 550.

From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - Glue residue on the cover, otherwise good and clean. - From the text: Polus thinks that if one had to choose between ádikón and ádikásthai between wronging another and suffering wrong oneself the former would be the better option. But he admits that it would be the "uglier" (aischion) (Gorg., 474C). This admission (to which I shall refer as "T" hereafter), writes Professor E. R. Dodds, "proves fatal to his case, as Callicles will point out at 482D." Is this a correct diagnosis of Polus defeat? "Because of just this concession," says Callicles (loc. cit.), "he was tripped up in the argument and his mouth was stopped." Is this really true? So all modern commentators seem to have thought: I have not seen one word to the contrary in the literature. I believe that this opinion is mistaken. It is not Polus profession of T that proves fatal to his case, but his failure to keep his wits about him in the ensuing argument. Sprache: Englisch Gewicht in Gramm: 550.

From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - Author's name handwritten on cover, otherwise very good and clean. - From the text: Persicos odi, puer, apparatus, displicent nexae philyra coronae; mitte sectari, rosa quo locorum sera moretur. simplici myrto nihil allabores sedulus euro: neque te ministrum dedecet myrtus neque me sub arta vite bibentem. Persicos odi is a poem strategically placed. Its Sapphic stanzas reply to the Alcaics of the preceding nunc est bibendum (and this antiphony will be the prevailing pattern in Book II); its quiet tone dissipates the frenzied enthusiasm of the previous ode (nunc est bibendum is transmuted at the close to a leisurely vite bibentem); and its theme the rejection of Oriental luxury in favor of Roman simplicity eases the passage from Cleopatra who precedes to Cato and the civil wars which follow. This is a prime instance of callida iunctura not of words within a poem but of poems within the corpus. - Wikipedia: Mark Owen Lee, also known as M. Reprint, stapled. Zustand: Gut. pp. 323-327. From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - Author's name handwritten on cover, otherwise very good and clean. From the text: The apa s classical atlas project was conceived as the means to an end, and rightly so. Good maps were taken to be vital tools for understanding ancient history and culture at any level, and the ones available in the early 1980s were altogether woefully inadequate. The project was designed to fill this void by preparing a comprehensive atlas for publication in the not-too-distant future. To make a definitive claim at this moment that the target of publication by the end of 1999 will be met must still rank as hubris. Without doubt, however, the odds have increasingly shifted over the past few years in favor of timely completion. As everyone knows, the problems of designing, funding, and developing any ambitious collaborative project are immense, and the atlas has been handed its full share of such difficulties and more. Yet gradually the difficulties seem to have been surmounted, and the project at present, anyway remains resolutely on schedule, as much to the surprise of its Director as to everyone else. - Wikipedia: Richard John Alexander Talbert (born 26 April 1947) is a British-American contemporary ancient historian and classicist on the faculty of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he is William Rand Kenan, Jr., Professor of Ancient History and Classics. These sources were basically twofold: historical (or antiquarian) and poetic. The former as we can judge from Cato, Livy (I, 1, 3), and Dionysius of Halicarnassus (I, 57-65) - provided the main outline, while the considerable discrepancies between them provided our poet with every justification to introduce his own embellishments and alterations. As for poetic sources, Vergil drew heavily from the battle scenes in the Iliad, but he also has his Mezentius echo Aeschylus Parthenopaeus and Apollonius of Rhodes Idas in making a god of his spear. From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - Cover lightly rubbed, handwritten text on cover, a bit dog eared, paper browned, otherwise clean. - From the text: The emergence of the oral technique of composition in recent Homeric studies compels the historian of early Greek literature to reexamine certain assumptions about the nature and character of this literature. One of the problems confronting him is the determination of the range, depth, and extent of the oral tradition. An oral atlas is needed, one which will show the centres of epichoric oral schools, a list of the bards and, if possible, their wanderings, the diverse genres of oral poetry, for, as is well known, the epic is not the only expression of oral literature. It must also include non-heroic material such as hymns, theogonies, utilitarian poetry, catalogues, folksongs, such as we have mentioned in the Shield of Achilles, even laments. When this chapter is written it will not be confined, as at present, to Homer and the pre-Homeric tradition but will extend in an unbroken tradition to the end of the sixth century. It will include Hesiod, the Cyclic epic, other oral epics for which we have evidence only in pottery, in lyric and dramatic poetry, finally the Homeric hymns. At the moment we are still in the charting stage. - James A. Notopoulos (* 4. Juli 1905, Altoona (PA), died 17. Oktober 1967, West Hartford (CT)). Sprache: Englisch Gewicht in Gramm: 550 Reprint. From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of the ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - With dedication by the author. - Author's name handwritten on cover, 1 typogr. corr., otherwise clean. - From the text: Viximus insignes inter utraque facem (Prop. 4.11.46): nuptiae evoke funus. Of this morbid symbolism the author of this learned, sober, and wise book takes no notice. Only a word on the wedding torches: none on the funereal; only a handful of pages on the wedding itself (161-70). The ceremony, with its pageantry, murky customs, and symbolism that was already obscure to the Romans themselves, was the scholarly province of Roman antiquarians. It still is. The most detailed modern description remains that of A. Rossbach, Untersuchungen über die römische Ehe (Stuttgart, 1853), 252-389. There is no serviceable collection of iconographical sources: Rossbach s Römische Hochzeits- und Ehedenkmäler (Leipzig, 1871) is outdated; it contains only a description of monuments, but no photographic reproductions. The Roman wedding as a social happening and as a religious ceremony still awaits its modern author. - Wikipedia: Jerzy Sever Linderski (born 21 August 1934 in Lwow, Poland, now Lviv) is a contemporary Polish scholar of ancient history and Roman religion and law.
