Paperback. Zustand: Good. Paperback. 42pp, [4] ads. Sid stitched signatures. Foxed throughout with some expected loss to the edges and a stain to the top of the front, else a good, complete example. Uncommon. An odd hoax, perpetrated by a student at Shrewsbury School. Abraham Cawston, aged about 16, claimed to have met in a coach a stranger who took a fancy to him and expressed the intention of making the boy heir to his own enormous fortune. Cawston then announced his patron's death and proceeded to convince his family and various bankers of the truth of his story. "He referred to a palace that he had in Spain, full of works of art, and instructed his solicitor to look out for a large country house for him and to acquire for him a few parliamentary boroughs. The Empress of Russia, he said, paid interest of six thousand pounds a year on a loan from his benefactor, and he claims too, on the King of Spain. the hoax lasted only a few months. The acceptance of his story is incapable of explanation, but the facts are not in dispute. He subsequently became a clergyman."-Oldham, A History of Shrewsbury School pages 88-9. OCLC locates only ten examples.

Erstausgabe
Leather. Zustand: Good Only. None (illustrator). First edition. A very scarce first edition of this significant and popular novel. Scarce and only comes up at auction every ten years or so. This work is invariably browned and foxed and often damaged as it was widely read at the time and this particular copy is rather better than most. Could do with a sympathetic rebind but would make a very good copy once done. Published anonymously, authorship was often considered to be Oliver Goldsmith. However, scholars now agree the revised the text for the second edition and the true author is Sarah Scott. With an illustrated frontispiece. Bound with one leaf of publisher's advertisements to the rear. Sarah Scott was an English novelist, translator, social reformer and member of the Bluestockings. A Description of Millenium Hall is her most famous work. The novel is set in a utopian community of women devoted to artistic pursuits and education, Christian virtues and philanthropy. It provided a fictional example of the ideals of the bluestocking circle. It was extremely popular upon initial publication, going through four editions by 1778. An interest in this novel has been revived in the 21st century among feminist literary scholars. Direct from the library of the late Hugh Selbourne MD (1906-1973) a noted book collector and diarist. In a full calf binding. Externally, worn. Boards, extremities and spine are all rubbed. Loss to head and tail of spine. Front board has detached but present. Rear joint is starting but firm with the hinge tender with cords showing. Prior owner's inscription to recto of front endpaper and to recto of front blank. Selbourne library stamp to verso of title page. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are age-toned with instances of scattered spots throughout. Good Only. book.

Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. 4th Edition. Fourth edition. 8vo. (6.9 x 4.4 inches). Engraved frontis showing two men viewing Millenium Hall through several trees, engraved by A. Walker. ii, 262pp. Some very light spotting to a few pages but overall a very good copy in a recent period style binding of half tan calf. Spine with raised bands. Compartments ruled, lettered and decorated in gilt. Red and green labels, gilt. Marbled paper on boards. ---- An important early feminist utopian novel. The most famous work of Sarah Scott (1720-1795), Millenium Hall describes a female utopia, free from male violence, where property is held in common and a community of women conduct lives devoted to artistic pursuits and education, Christian virtues, and philanthropy. Through its focus on female equality, education and friendship, and with the Hall forming a model of mid-century reform ideas, it provided a fictional embodiment of the ideals of the Blue Stockings Society, of which Scott was a member and of which her sister, Elizabeth Montagu, was leader. A successful work in its time, it went through four editions by 1778, and in recent years has undergone a resurgence of scholarly and public interest, with a renewed focus on its early feminist meaning.
