Erstausgabe
Half-title with woodcut printer's device, title-page within woodcut architectural border, 2nd title-page fol. 1v. with different figured woodcut border, different printer's device on last leaf verso and at the end, numerous large and small figured woodcut initials in the text, by Urs Graf, Ambrosius Holbein, and Hans Frank. 4 leaves, 710, (1) pp.; (28) leaves index. Folio. 17th century calf, back gilt (joints and foot of spine somewhat restored). Old ms. name on title. Basel, Joh. Froben, Febr. 1527. An important document of the humanistic spirit , and remarkably beautifully printed with outstanding book decoration during Erasmus' lifetime. In the early years of the 16th century the demand for the original text of the New Testament began to mount and Erasmus (1467-1536) soon saw the necessity to translate the original Greek text into Latin. His first text-critical edition of the New Testament was one of the important foundations for Reformation theology. These present Erasmus commentaries were the first ferment of theological discussion at that time and are of great value. This is the 4th printing of the additional text notes contributed by Erasmus. They show mistakes that ancient theologians had made during their translation, and revealed misunderstandings that had arisen due to the lack of knowledge of the text copyists. The first separate printing of this work was done by Froben at Basel in 1519 (Bezzel 1212) as an indepent work. Through the years probably altogether a total of eight editions appeared as listed by most of the bibliographers. Numerous excerpts and vernacular versions circulated later.- Some little wormholes in the last 30 leaves, some spots, otherwise with wide margins, and still a good copy. - VD 16 E 3096; Adams E-891; Vander Haeghen II, 58; Bezzel 1215; Hieronymus, Oberrhein. Buchillustration II, 302 (detailed); cf. Knaake II, 302. BIBLES ; HELVETICA: ALLGEMEIN ; BIBELN, RELIGION ; HUMANISM ; REFORMATION ;

Hardcover. Zustand: g- to vg. Editio nova (new edition). Quarto. [26], 1180, [52]pp (Vol. I), [6], 1288, [70]pp (Vol. II.(1), Vol. II.(2)). Contemporary full calf, with gold lettering and ruling to spines. Raised bands. Decorative paper edges. Engraved frontispiece portrait of the author in first volume. Three title pages (one for the first volume and two for the second (Part 1 and Part 2)). Decorative head-, tailpieces, and initials. Originally published in Amsterdam and Paris between 1641 and 1650, "Annotationes in Novum Testamentum" (Annotations on the New Testament) reveals Grotius' plea for an undogmatic Christian faith. Indeed, the author's aim in publishing this work was to promote the unity of the Christian churches in the spirit of the early Christian Church, when such unity, according to him at least, still existed. In blatant contravention of Reformed doctrine, Hugo Grotius emphasizes the importance of oral tradition as a supplement to, but on the same level as, written sources, in doing so, he makes a distinction between the law of nature from the precepts and admonitions to Christians. This 3-vol. set bound in two is divided as followed: - Volume I (1755): Quatuor Evangelia et explicationem decalogi continens. - Volume II: Part I (1756). Acta Apostolorum, et Paulli Epistolas ad Romanos, Corinthios, Galatas, Ephesios, Philippenses, et Colossenses complectens; Part II (1757). Epistolas Paulli ad Thessalonicenses, Timotheum, Titum, Philemonem, Hebraeos, Porro Epistolas Iacobi, Petri, Ioannis, Iudae, et Ioannis Apocalypsin complectens. Moderate rubbing to bindings. Some chipping to head and tail of spines. Ex-library copy, with book plate and contemporary inscription on inside of each front cover, and stamps (Melanchtonhaus) on fly leaves and the first two title pages. Sporadic contemporary marginalia. Text in Latin. Bindings in overall good-, interior in good+ to very good condition. About the author: Hugo Grotius (1583-1645) was a Dutch jurist and scholar whose masterpiece "De Jure Belli ac Pacis" (1625: On the Law of War and Peace) is considered one of the greatest contributions to the development of international law. Also a statesman and diplomat, Grotius has been called the "father of international law.".
