Erstausgabe
Leather_bound. Zustand: Fine. First edition. First edition. Two volumes. Small octavo, original tree calf , spine decorated in gilt and with red leather label stamped in gilt. A SET OF BINDING COPIES ONLY with boards detached from both volumes and most of the spine peeled away on Vol. 1. Large church library bookplates front pastedowns of both volumes. Vol 1: (2) xxiv (including dedication page to President George Washington)+ 327 (2). Vol 2: (2) 342 (2). Despite the dreadful condition of the bindings, the text blocks are tight and the text has only occasional foxing. Sold as is. Ogden was the first American to refute Paine's "Age of Reason"; Paine's deist views and criticism of organized religion made him increasingly unpopular, especially in the United States and England and many of those who befriended him during the American Revolution abandoned him in his later years. Paine also turned on George Washington, writing him several critical letters (and publishing them in England--they were supressed in the United States), making Ogden's laudatory dedication of this work to the President particularly significant.
