Leather. Zustand: Very Good Indeed. None (illustrator). A quarto edition of this famed historical poem by Scottish poet, Sir Walter Scott. In a handsome quarter morocco binding. With 'Eighth Edition' stated to the title page. This is a reissue of the large paper copy of the eighth edition which was originally published in 1808. A very scarce reissue. The same year as this publication the eleventh edition, in octavo, was published. With notes on the work to the rear. Rebound, in a quarter morocco binding. Would appear this copy has been bound without the half-title. Prior owner's inscription to the rear endpaper, being a transcription of 'To An Oak Tree, Said to Mark the Grave of Captain Wogan, who was Killed in the Year 1649' which can be found in 'The Flower Vase; a selection of Poetry by the Most Esteemed Authors.' This appears to be a traditional Scottish poem, with an unknown author. Scott's intention was to depict 'the customs and manners which anciently prevailed on the Borders of England and Scotland.the inhabitants living in a state partly pastoral and partly warlike, and combining habits of constant depredation with the influence of a rude spirit of chivalry'. The Lay was an immediate publishing phenomenon, bringing Scott instant fame. There were six editions within three years, with sales rising to 27,000 copies within a decade, unparalleled figures for poetry. In the first instance of Scott's impact upon tourism in Scotland, the description of the moonlit Melrose Abbey (Canto II, stanza 1) brought a stream of sightseers to the ruined Abbey and led to it becoming a popular subject with nineteenth-century painters. The poem's fans included even the Prime Minister, William Pitt, who recited passages from the poem at his dinner table. (walterscottlib) In a quarter morocco binding. Externally, excellent with minor shelfwear. Internally, firmly bound. Repair to the title page. Pages are generally bright. Tidemarks to the top of pages clxxii-end at the gutter. Occasional light spots to pages. Very Good Indeed. book.

Leather. Zustand: Very Good Indeed. None (illustrator). The Second Edition of Sir Walter Scott's narrative poem bound with the First Edition of his Ballads and Lyrical Pieces. Bound without half titles and advertisments. From the library of the Titley Court Estate. Titley Court was home to the Greenly family for over 500 years. The Greenly family have a long and fascinating history, perhaps most famous for the life and library of Elizabeth Greenly, later Lady Elizabeth Greenly, who was noted as a collector and patron of literature and the arts. The Greenly library consists mostly of her collection of contemporary Regency literature, however it was expanded after her death by various members of her extended family. Notable among these are Edward Greenly, a famous Victorian geologist, and William Bradford, a founding father who travelled to America on the Mayflower and who was closely associated with the Greenlys at Titley Court through marriage. The rich and diverse history of the Greenlys at Titley Court is reflected in the broad selection of works found in the library. The Lay of the Last Minstrel is written in six cantos and is a verse romance in the gothic style. It is a good example of handling basic Romantic themes. It was an immediate success and made Scott famous. His Ballads and Lyrical Pieces contain 15 titles including The Fire King, Thomas the Rhymer and Cadyow Castle. In a half leather binding with gilt stamping to spine. Externally, very smart. Rubbing to spine. Prior owner's bookplate to front pastedown, E H Greenly. E H Greenly's signature to both pages. Internally, firmly bound. Internally, firmly bound with spotting to first and last few pages. Very Good Indeed. book.

First edition of his first collected works, including previously unpublished poems alongside pieces which Wordsworth heavily revised for this publication. The edition is also notable for its preface, which contains his "most extensive discussion of the imagination and of imaginative poetry" (Hodgson, p. 273). This set has been attractively bound with two later works, Peter Bell and The Waggoner. Wordsworth saw his first anthology as his moment to assert the literary unity of his canon and cement his name among the annals of great British poets. Towards this end, he devised a new scheme of poetic organization, in which poems are grouped into categories such as "Poems of the Fancy" and "Poems Founded on the Affections" according to "the power of mind predominant in their production" (ibid.) Anticipating criticism, Wordsworth defends this plan in a lengthy preface and essay which are notorious amongst critics and scholars, whose prevailing consensus is that this scheme is less systematic than idiosyncratic. Regardless, the great importance Wordsworth placed on the arrangement of the poems was fundamental in shaping the edition, upon which he hoped his legacy and national image would be judged. Volume I is bound with Peter Bell in the second edition, called for a fortnight after the first due to intense public demand. Wordsworth originally wrote this piece in 1798 but excluded it from his Lyrical Ballads. News of the impending publication of Peter Bell in 1819 reached John Hamilton Reynolds, who caused a public spectacle by rushing out a pastiche of the work before it had appeared. Wordsworth released his highly anticipated original one week later and saw "his most immediate sales success" (Gill, p. 332). He then swiftly published another earlier poem, The Waggoner, which he first composed in 1806; its first edition is bound into the second volume. Cornell Wordsworth Collection 30, 47, 49; Patton, pp. 8-12; Reed A13, A24b, A25; Wise, Bibliography 11, 16-17; Wise, Two Lake Poets, pp. 17-19, 21-2. Stephen Gill, William Wordsworth: A Life, 1990; John A. Hodgson, "Poems of the Imagination, Allegories of the Imagination: Wordsworth's Preface of 1815 and the Redundancy of Imaginative Poetry", Studies in Romanticism, vol. 27, no. 2, Summer 1988, pp. 273-88. 3 works in 2 volumes, octavo (209 x 126 mm). Near-contemporary diced calf, spines with two green labels and elaborate floral tooling in compartments, covers bordered with twin gilt fillet and a foliate roll, board edges and turn-ins decorated in gilt, marbled endpapers and edges. With 2 copper engravings by John Charles Bromley and an aquatint by Samuel William Reynolds as frontispieces, all after Sir George Beaumont. Bookplate of Plymouth Iron Company in each volume, overlaid in the first with the bookplate of the Fothergill family, who acquired the company in 1862; hand-inked monograph of one A.J.C. on front free endpapers verso. Spines lightly and uniformly sunned, a little rubbing, usual oxidization of plates, sporadic light foxing. A near-fine set.
