12mo, pp. xii, 317; rebound in recent half calf, spine gilt, red morocco label. First London edition and the first noted in ESTC the collection seems to have been first published in Bristol in 1773. A very popular poetical miscellany, of which there were about a dozen editions issued by 1810. Included here is an early version of a famous hymn by William Cowper, beginning 'God works in mysterious ways'; the text here shows a number of variants from the version published in Olney Hymns (1779), where the hymn begins, 'God moves in mysterious ways'. A fine copy, complete with the half-title. Scarce: ESTC reports two issues of this edition, one, as here, with Richard Onely's poem The Charge of Cyrus the Great on p. 99 (three copies only), and the other with Goldsmith's Deserted Village in its place (two copies). ESTC reports a further six copies where the issue is unspecified (at least one of those probably being a double-counted copy). NCBEL II 394 notes a single copy, in a private collection, of an edition printed in 1773 in Bristol, where the compiler lived, but there is no record of this printing in ESTC, and the 1777 edition is the earliest there.

Wanting the half-title and final leaf of text; repaired tears to the title page, p. xix with extending marginal tear, prelims a little soiled, else a good copy. [2], xxiv, 310; 12mo. Twentieth-century quarter brown leather and marbled boards. Provincially-printed anthology. Religious, as per the title, ranging from Milton to the present (Goldsmith, 'The Deserted Village', first published 1770). 'William Pine holds an important place in the history of Bristol printing because of the excellent quality of his work. He was the printer of the Bristol Gazette from 1767, and in 1774 he produced a Bible in pearl type, then the smallest size made. He also printed the first published history of Bristol, William Barrett's History and Antiquities of the City of Bristol, 1789, a handsome quarto of over seven hundred pages with many folding plates.' (Woolrich, Printing in Bristol). Pine was a type-founder as well as a printer, and The Business of News in England, 1760 1820, lists among his sidelines, bookbinding. He is not listed as such by Ramsden; no doubt there was a bindery attached to his shop. This copy demonstrating evidence of female readership in the late eighteenth century, as reflected both in the printed list of subscribers, and in the two contemporary ownership inscriptions, of Anna Lucas and Anna Adams. Oxford (Regent's Park), Rylands, and Johns Hopkins only in ESTC, to which Worldcat adds Southampton, two copies in Canada, and five in the US. ESTC: T189227.
