Sir William BLACKSTONE (1723-1780) read classics and methematics at Oxford, became a Fellow of All Souls, and was called to the Bar in 1746. He served as assessor of the Chancellor`s court at Oxford, a delegate of the University Press, and took a large part in settling the scheme for the Vinerian Professorship of Englsih Law in 1756-58. From 1753 to 1758 he lectured privately at Oxford on English Law, the first lectures on English law ever given in a university. In 1758 he became Vinerian Professor and lectured on English law there till 1766, and his annual lectures became the basis of his Commentaries. His lectures spread his fame and his progress at the bar was rapid. He entered Parliament and took silk in 1761, became Solicitor-General to the Queen in 1763 and in 1766 he gave up his chair. In 1770 he became a judge of the King`s Bench and later in the same year he transferred to the Common Pleas where he proved himself an able judge and sat til his death. His major work was the Commentaries on the Laws of England (1765-1770) in four books dealing respectively with the Rights of Persons, the Rights of Things, Private Wrongs, and Public Wrongs. It was an immediate success and eight editions appeared in his lifetime and at least 15 more after his death, while in 1840-49 Serjeant Stephen produced new Commentaries founded on Blackstone but adapted to the changed state of the law. The Commentaries were equally popular in the U.S.A. and passed through many editions there, being the chief source of knowledge of English Law for many years and it inspired Kent`s Commentaries on American Law. The editor, Richard Burn, has also noted alterations made by subsequent acts of Parliament. Blackstone s Commentaries, based on his lectures given at Oxford beginning in 1753, constitute the first attempt since Bracton to provide a coherent account of English law as a whole. "Blackstone inaugurated university instruction in English law His great achievement was his reduction to lucid and systematic statement of that disordered bulk of laws which had gradually accumulated since the days of Bracton. Although Blackstone lacked the originality and force of some of his predecessors in English legal literature, such as Bracton, Coke and Hale, his Commentaries, written in a style at once dignified, urbane and clear, are the most complete survey of the English legal system ever composed by a single hand." First editions of vols. III and IV, third edition of vols. I and II, of the supreme work on English law, Blackstone's magnum opus, a major influence on the Founding Fathers, and the foundation of all legal analysis for the next two centuries. "Blackstone's great work on the laws of England is the extreme example of justification of an existing state of affairs by virtue of its history. Until the Commentaries, the ordinary Englishman had viewed the law as a vast, unintelligible and unfriendly machine. Blackstone's great achievement was to popularize the law and the traditions which had influenced its formation. He takes a delight in describing and defending as the essence of the constitution the often anomalous complexities which had grown into the laws of England over the centuries. But he achieves the astonishing feat of communicating this delight, and this is due to a style which is itself always lucid and graceful" (PMM). With the contemporary bookplate to front pastedowns of Richard Scott Esq, either the elder (1731-1770), inheritor of the Betton estates, or the younger (1731-1821), wealthy merchant who acquired the manors of Whitley and Welbatch and the estates of Underdale and Peniarth Ucha.
