Full-Leather. Zustand: Good. No Jacket. 2nd Ed. Pp. xxviii, 304. Hand-coloured frontispiece and 5 hand-coloured plates. Contemporary full grained calf, with later spine and repairs to corners, later end papers. No lettering to spine but repair work well executed. Some slight foxing and offsetting from plates, plates themselves clean, two leaves of text slightly torn but without loss of text. Size: 18.0 x 10.0 Cms.

Hardback. Zustand: Fair. None (illustrator). First edition. A scarce first edition of this fantastic and much revered work on flower horticulture. A very rare survival in original publisher's boards. 'Including a dissertation on soils and manures, and containing also a catalogue of the finest and most-esteemed carnations etc that are cultivated by the amateur florist, and exhibited at the different prize-shows round London and other parts of England. To which are added, the rules and regulations of the Islington and Chelsea Florists' societies'. With a lovely hand-coloured frontispiece of 'a bizarre carnation'. Dedicated by permission to the Right Honourable Dowager Lady de Clifford. With interesting garden-themed bookplate to front pastedown. 'Sold by Mr Carpenter, Bookseller, Old Bond-Street, Messrs. G. and W. B. Whittaker, Booksellers, Ave Maria Lane; and by the Author, Paddington Green'. This work went through several editions, with additions and added colour plates. Thomas Hogg was a florist of Paddington Green, Middlesex. In original publisher's boards. Externally rubbed with marks, front board detached, wear and slight loss to the head and tail of the spine. Internally, firmly bound. Bright and generally clean, textblock edges dusted and just a few scattered dust marks and spots within. Very good internally. Fair. book.

More recent binding, by Bayntun-Riviere of Bath, of quarter leather over marbled boards in fine condition. A very pleasing copy indeed. This, the third, edition contains additions over earlier editions and contains Catalogues of the Finest and Most Esteemed Varieties of each Flower . This work by Thomas Hogg, the eminent nineteenth-century florist, is held in very high regard.
