"Vol. I begins with a brief history of chemistry, including an account of chemistry, including an account of the principal authors. The remainder of the volume treats the theory, beginning with the chief substances: mineral, vegetable and animal. Under mineral (fossil) substances metals, salts, sulphurs, stones and semi-metals are discussed. Instruments, the bodies by which changes are effected, are the treated in detail. The instruments include fire, air, water, earth, menstruums and chemical utensils. Vol. II contains the practice in which the operations are demonstrated. The volume contains some 227 experiments which were demonstrated during the lectures. The book was important and popular, as shown as by the numerous editions and translations. It supplied a clear, complete and orderly treatment of the best of chemistry at the time, contributing to its establishment as an independent science" (Cole zur Ausg. Leiden 1732). - Sehr gut erhaltenes, sauberes Exemplar.

Garrison and Morton (73): "His greatest work was Elementa chemiae, published at Leiden, 1732"; Duveen (p. 84).

Buch
Herman Boerhaave (1668-1738) had given private colleges on chemistry since 1702. In 1718 he succeeded Jacobus Lemort as Professor of Chemiae. As already mentioned, he had not intended to edit a book on chemistry, but was forced to do so after the appearance of his dictations in 1724: "that wretched spurious edition printed from incorrect copies of the 'Dictat' . under the name pf Paris" (Burton: p.148). This spurious book 'Institutiones et Experimentia Chemiae', was repinted several times. Boerhaave's authentic work 'The Elementa Chemicae' appeared in 1732. After resigning his duty as Professor Botanices et Chemiae (1729), Boerhaave applied himself to the experiments of mercury with unbelievable zeal. The results were printed in the Transactions of the Royal Society of Sciences of London and Paris. Fine Venice edition of the auhorized version of Hermann Boerhave's (1668-1738) famous textbook of chemistry, based on his lectures. The ELEMENTA soon became the most popular treatise on chemistry of the period. To the historian of chemistry it had also a special interest, for part one contains one of the finest accounts of the development of chemistry written up to the time. Lindeboom 459; Partington II, 740-759.
