Leather. Zustand: Good Only. None (illustrator). Two original leatherbound volumes. Two very early volumes of this influential edition of the New Testament. Philip Doddridge (1702-51) was an English Nonconformist leader and writer. Throughout the 1730s and 1740s Philip Doddridge continued his academic and pastoral work, and developed close relations with numerous early religious revivalists and independents, through extensive visits and correspondence. Through this approach he helped establish and maintain a circle of influential independent religious thinkers and writers, including Dr Isaac Watts. He also became a prolific author and hymn-writer. This is volumes one and two only. These volumes could do with some repair work. In full calf bindings. There is some wear to the extremities including bumping to the corners, heavy rubbing, scratches and some loss to the leather. There is some loss to the spine label of volume 2. The bindings are tight and firm, although the front outer hinges are cracked and the rear boards are holding by the cords only and these could become detached in the post. Internally the pages are generally clean and bright with the occasional handling mark and odd spot. The front blank endpaper of Volume 2 is detached and present but the rear blank endpaper is detached and missing. There are no blank endpapers present in Volume 1 and there is some creasing and a tear with loss to the bottom of the title page. Good Only. book.

Leather. Zustand: Very Good Indeed. None (illustrator). A remarkably scarce six volume study of the New Testament from this somewhat controversial independent minister. An extremely scarce six volume study of the New Testament, from independent Christian minister John Guyse (1680-1761). Guyse was known for the vigour of his attacks on Arianism, a theology whereby Jesus Christ is distinguishable from the Father, and therefore subordinate to him. Each of these volumes is concerned with distinct portions of the New Testament, with lengthy notes from Guyse, an alphabetical table of information, and a lengthy index to the rear of volume VI.Here present in its fifth edition, 'The Practical Expositor' was first published in three volumes between 1739 and 1752, before being reprinted as a six volume work. It is scarce in all editions.ESTC reference no. T94421 All volumes in a uniform contemporary tree calf binding. The odd mark to the boards, and some rubbing to extremities. Some discolouration to spines, with rubbing resulting in small losses to leather, particularly at head of volume IV, and tail of volume I. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are age toned, with some light spotting. Very Good Indeed. book.
