Erstausgabe
Hardcover. Zustand: Good. 1st Edition. 8vo. xi + (1) + 412pp. 1 engraved plate, numerous engravings in text. Original decorative gilt cloth, gilt title. Newly introduced ferns were of special interest to John Smith as Curator at Kew from 1842 to 1864, and he did much to promote their appeal in the Victorian period. He researched the subject with William Hooker, publishing his catalogue of Cultivated Ferns in 1857 (Pritzel 9754). The above volume follows that catalogue in listing numerous further species that had been sent to Kew; and there is a history of exotic ferns and their introduction from the late 18th century and earlier, with generic names and their derivations, also indexes of species and synonyms particularly useful due to the variety of names given to the same plant. The first edition. Occasional very light spotting, generally in good condition. Desmond, pp637-8. David Elliston Allen, The Victorian Fern Craze, 1969, pp4, 6, 60. Stafleu & Cowan 12.289.
