Zustand: Very Good. Antique print, titled: 'Veronica Teucrium.' - Nr. 401: "Zachtharige Eerenprijs". Broadleaf Speedwell or Austrian Speedwell (Veronica austriaca). Includes a description sheet (in Dutch) and a dispersion map for this plant in the Netherlands. One of the plates from the mammoth publication titled 'Flora Batava, of Afbeelding en beschrijving van Nederlandsche Gewassen', published from 1800-1934 by several Dutch publishers, including Loosjes and Nijhoff). In total the 461 periodic issues contained 2240 prints. The initial publisher was J.C. Sepp. The long publication period reflects the change in the technique of its illustrations. Hand coloured copper engravings were initially used, followed by hand coloured lithographs, and finally chromolithography was introduced. Initially the texts and editing work were done by Jan Kops, although several other would follow during the 134-year span in which this work was published. Handcoloured engraving on hand laid paper. Made by 'Jan Christiaan Sepp' after an anonymous artist. Jan Christiaan Sepp (Amsterdam, 1739 1811) was a Dutch draughtsman, engraver, natural historian and publisher, from a notable family of artists and publishers. Jan Kops (1765-1849) is the author of this work. He was an Anabaptist Dutch agronomist and botanist. His most notable contribution to botany was the founding of the long-lived journal "Flora Batava" in 1800 and contributing text for the first 10 volumes. Very good, given age. Margins edges faintly browned and with a few scattered small stains. A second scientific name in manuscript pasted below the caption. General age-related toning and/or occasional minor defects from handling. Please study scan carefully. The overall size is ca. 24.5 x 29.5 cm. The image size is ca. 10.5 x 23 cm. The overall size is ca. 9.6 x 11.6 inch. The image size is ca. 4.1 x 9.1 inch. Storage location: TPCRC-A33-07.

Viennae, L.J. Kaliwoda (& J.M. Gerold), 1773-1778. 5 volumes. Folio (470 x 285mm). With 5 large handcoloured engraved title-vignettes (views) and 500 handcoloured engraved plates and 1 plain plate. Contemporary half russia, gilt lettered and ornamented spines, marbled sides (some skilful repairs to spines). First and only edition of Jacquin's rare flora of Austria, containing fine plates by his principal artist, Franz von Scheidl. It is a monument of the grand Austrian botanical era which royal patronage made possible. This work and Waldstein & Kitaibel's flora are the only two 'great flower books' devoted to the Austrian flora. Blunt describes it as ranking with the 'Flora Danica', 'Flora Graeca' and 'Flora Londinensis' as the finest books dealing with the wild flowers of a European country. The work was subsidised by the Imperial court, and printed on their presses. Jacquin (1727-1817) was born in Holland of French parents. "He went to Vienna in 1752 to complete his medical study and was soon involved in organising a botanical collecting expedition for the Emperor Francis I, husband of Empress Maria Theresa. This expedition lasted from 1754 to 1759 and sent back a very rich collection from the West Indies to the gardens of the Imperial Summer Palace at Schönbrunn. In 1768, Jacquin became Director of the University Gardens in Vienna and Professor of Botany . posts he held until his retirement in 1797. (Rix, The art of the Botanist p. 158). A very fine copy of noble provenance.Provenance: Armorial bookplate of Henry Rogers Broughton.Great Flower Books 61; Nissen BBI, 971.

rigide. Tam spontaneas, quam exoticas vidit, descripsit, et aeri incidi curavit, 1 vol. in-folio reliure italienne de l'époque plein veau brun (44 x 29,30 cm à la reliure, 42,5 x 28,6 cm en marges), dos à 6 nerfs ornés, plats richement ornés à décors géométriques et semis d'étoiles, coupes et chasses ornées, gardes moirées, toutes tranches dorées, Ex Typographia Reg. & Imp. Monasterii S. Salvatori, Ticini [Pavie], 1786 - 1788, 4 ff. Great Flower Books, 139 ; Nissen, BBI, 1822 ; Pritzel, 8558 ; Sothebys, Magnificent Botanical Books, 331. Scarce and perfectly complete copy of one of the greatest botanical books of the 18th century, illustrated with 75 black plates under serpentine, by B. Bordiga, J. Cairoli, J. F. Chiesa and J. Lanfranchi. It offers a description of the flora and fauna of Lombardy and of rare plants from the Pavia Botanical Garden. It is difficult to find such complete copies, a certain number of leaves (pp. 103-114 of volume II: "Specimen Botanicum De Astragalo") having been destroyed during the sack of Pavia by the French troops in 1796. The high quality original binding is used and in need of restoration (split on joint with a tear on spinel, missing caps, corners very rubbed.), the interior is well preserved (a few small stains and rare wet spots, not affecting the plates, very good condition otherwise) for this very rare copy, perfectly complete with the text, the 3 titles, the 3 half-titles and the 75 beautiful plates. Langue: Français.
