First edition of this taxonomic survey of British plants. Smith (1759-1828) purchased Carl Linnaeus's collection of specimens after his close friend, the explorer and naturalist Joseph Banks (1743-1820), declined to do so. Smith subsequently founded the Linnean Society in 1788 and remained its president until his death. The owner of this copy, Thomas Knight (1759-1838), was likely an acquaintance of the author. Flora Britannica was gratefully received by Smith's contemporaries: "The acquisition of the Linnaean Herbarium soon discovered to the botanists of England that many of our native plants had been mistaken, and that the nomenclature of our whole Flora stood in need of revision" (Smith, p. 449). Numerous prominent botanists congratulated Smith on the work, such as Davies Gilbert (1767-1839), Jean-Baptiste Lamarck (1744-1829), and Thomas Frankland (1750-1831), the latter praising it as an invaluable tool to "lessen the botanists labour tenfold" (ibid., p. 451). A third volume was published in 1804. Provenance: Knight was a botanist who served as the second President of the Royal Horticultural Society. This copy was purchased from a sale of his books in 1951 at his seat, Downton Castle, as stated by a printed paper label affixed to the front pastedowns. This copy also bears the armorial bookplates on the front pastedowns of Christopher Paget Norbury (1908-1975), a horticulturist who was instrumental in establishing the Pershore College of Horticulture in Warwickshire. Pleasance Smith, ed., Memoir and Correspondence of the Late Sir James Edward Smith, 1832. Two volumes, octavo. Original cream quarter boards, spines lettered in manuscript, blue sides, edges uncut. Ink ownership initials "A.N." to front pastedowns. Extremities worn, stripping to covers, spines a little toned, but boards overall well preserved, majority of gatherings partially unopened, contents clean: in very good condition.
