Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. Illustrated Edition. 8vo. vi + (2) + 271pp (ie 273) + 9pp (plate descriptions) + 36pp, publisher's list. With 8 hand-coloured engraved plates. Recent half calf. The florists' flowers dealt with are the hyacinth, tulip, ranunculus, anemone, auricula, carnation, pink and polyanthus. Maddock announces the work as the first of its kind, and it was certainly considered the best English work on the subject until Thomas Hogg's treatise appeared in 1820 (Henrey). Competition for prize florists' flowers was intense. The original author of this volume (first publ. 1792) is assumed to be the elder James Maddock (d. 1786) whose firm was at Walworth, Newington; his son, also James Maddock, married a first cousin of the distinguished botanist William Curtis, and his wife's brother, Samuel Curtis, eventually took over the firm, publishing the above new improved (second) edition of the work. Henrey 1003. See Desmond pp461-2.

2 Bde. Gr.-8°. Titel, 100 num. Bl., Index; Titel Bl. 101-200, Index.
