Erstausgabe
First edition of this early work by the agricultural reformer, from the library of Robert Saunders Dundas, Second Viscount Melville (1771-1851), with his armorial bookplate. Melville was President of the Board of Control, and a holder of high government positions during the Napoleonic Wars, perhaps the reason for his interest in this survey of France and its people, with comparisons to Britain. "Young devoted considerable space in the Letters Concerning the Present State of the French Nation to such subjects as architecture, painting, music, and literature. On the whole he showed himself remarkably free from national prejudice. He greatly admired many features of French culture, and felt that France was definitely superior in painting, sculpture, engraving, drama, and in writings on agriculture and natural history. On the other hand England excelled in architecture, music, and in most fields of writing - politics, moral philosophy, novels, and poetry. In the realm of culture he appeared impartial, even cosmopolitan" (Earle, pp. 151-2). It is perhaps worth noting that at this stage Young had not been to the country. ESTC T96216. Edward Mead Earle, Nationalism and Internationalism, 1950. Octavo (205 x 125 mm). Contemporary calf, rebacked. Slight wear at tips, contents clean with scattered very light foxing. A very good copy.
