8vo. pp. xvi, 528. wood-engraved frontis. text illus. A very nice copy in original blind & gilt-stamped cloth (some foxing to outer leaves). Second Revised Edition. This is the British geologist s third great work, which went through three editions in one year. "In this he gave a general survey of the arguments for man s early appearance on the earth derived from the discoveries of flint implements in post-Pliocene strata in the Somme valley and elsewhere; he discussed also the deposits of the Glacial epoch, and in the same volume he gave in his adhesion to Darwin s theory of the origin of species." (Encyc. Brit., 11th Edn.) Lyell was a close personal friend of Darwin and was one of the first scientists to support the Origin but he had trouble accepting natural selection as the main motive force in evolution on religious grounds. Zustand: A very good copy. Edition : 1ST, contemporary full cloth with gilt image of a fossile on the upper cover, within a blind stamped boarder. Rebacked skillfully saving the original flat spine with title in gilt., Geological Evidences of the Antiquity of Man brought together Lyell's views on three key themes from the geology of the Quaternary Period of Earth history: glaciers, evolution, and the age of the human race. First published in 1863, it went through three editions that year, with a fourth and final edition appearing in 1873.Charles Darwin was a close personal friend, and Lyell was one of the first prominent scientists to support The Origin of Species?though he never fully accepted natural selection as the driving engine behind evolution. In fact, Lyell was instrumental in arranging the peaceful co-publication of the theory of natural selection by Darwin and Alfred Russel Wallace in 1858, after each discovered it independently., Size : 8vo, 2 woodcut plates including frontis, and numerous woodcut text illustrations. Contemporary pencil notes on the last blank page., P. half-title, advertisment, blank, frontis, title, printer?s imprint, v-xii, 1-520, 1-32.
