Zustand: Gut. 32 S.; graph. Darst.; 15,5 cm; geheftet. Gutes Ex.; Einband leicht berieben. - Mit 2 beiligenden farbigen Ansichtskarten (Hawaii). - Englisch. - The Hawaiians had no written language until about 1820. At that time the Missionaries gave them a simple alphabet of 12 letters; 5 vowels and 7 consonants. Be sure to consider each vowel a syllable; then place the accent on the bold-face syllable. The following table is close enough to serve all present-day practical purposes: A-Pronounced as the vowel in WASH E-Pronounced as the vowel in DAY I-Pronounced as the vowel in BE 0-Pronounced as the vowel in SLOW U-Pronounced as the vowel in DUDE The 7 consonants are H, K, L, M, N, P, and W. They are generally pronounced the same as in English, with some exceptions. K is a bit softer than in English. L is as a soft L in English, but sometimes as a soft R! W is as a soft V or W in English. People are forever arguing over whether or not "W" in some particular words should be pronounced "V." Whatever you do is wrong. Remember that when the language was reduced to writing, many of the old boys were in need of false teeth; also, on different islands the people had their own colloquial pronounciation. Note that visitors who arrived prior to the adopttion of any alphabet wrote TABU for KAPU, and TARO for KALO (S. 2) Sprache: Deutsch Gewicht in Gramm: 550.
