Full contemporary vellum boards. Upper and lower with decorative gilt fillet. Spine densely gilt with rules, fillet, stamps, and lettering. Board edges scored in gilt. Gilt dentelles. Marbled paste-in and free endpapers., Oliver Goldsmith (1728 ? 1774) was an Anglo-Irish novelist, playwright, dramatist and poet, who is best known for his novel The Vicar of Wakefield (1766), his pastoral poem The Deserted Village (1770), and his plays The Good-Natur?d Man (1768) and She Stoops to Conquer (1771, first performed in 1773). Towards the end of his life, Goldsmith became fascinated with the environment and sought to create a definitive text chronicling biological life on the planet. A History of the Earth was known not only for the breadth of information about wildlife of all kinds, but also for its early distinction between the types of sciences. Early in the text Goldsmith carefully delineates the realms of general and material physics, as well as the role of nature and natural law?Goldsmith, a notable naturalist, exposes serious flaws within the naturalist position; he reveals the loose boundary between the most sensitive of plants and the most stationary and unresponsive of animals, and criticizes the popular notion of a well-defined hierarchy in favor of a looser continuum of sentient life. , Size : 8vo. (204x116 mm), Very good examples of this work of natural history. With a profusion of plates. , Volume : 6 volumes. Slight warping of boards, marginal toning to interior, otherwise clean and crisp.

Oliver Goldsmith (1728-1774) was a novelist, playwright and poet and man of letters. Inspired by Buffon s monumental 'Histoire naturelle, générale et particulière', Goldsmith complied his own major work, acknowledging that he was drawing on a number of secondary sources including Pliny, Buffon, Willughby, De Geer etc. The work also includes Goldsmith s musings and entertaining anecdotes which greatly helped to make the work a publishing success, running to many editions. Written in fine literary prose, the modern reader is provided with a fascinating insight to late 18th century perspectives of the natural world, the excitement of recent discoveries in Australia and the Americas and the place that the human race had in the world.
