2 volumes folio 14 1/2 x 11 inches, original publisher's gilt and blind embossed cloth. Cloth in good bright condition. First and second series. Half titles, two title pages with vignettes, xii, 144 and (vi), 45 pages, and 4 pages of music and a final leaf of publisher's advertisements- text illustrated throughout with wood engravings. ILLUSTRATED WITH TWO HAND COLOURED MAPS AND 55 LITHOGRAPH PLATES BY EDWARD LEAR. Complete. Condition- some general spotting as usual, text and plates loose within the Gutta Percha. Bibliography- Abbey Travel 172. Edward Lear (1812-1888) a legendary artist of European views and ornithology and a writer and illustrator of humorous limericks and poems. Lear notes in the preface 'I have executed the whole of the Lithographic drawings from my own sketches, and have endeavoured to preserve a close fidelity to the Originals'. Queen Victoria, one of the subscribers, was so impressed with the work that she invited Lear to give her a series of twelve drawing lessons (ODNB). The first series is devoted to the Abruzzi provinces of the Kingdom of Naples, the second to the Papal States.
