Both plates are browned and show a few minor splits along the folds which have since been sealed. In addition, there are numerous figures and illustrations within they text. Wear to the leather overall, head of front joint just starting to split. Marbled endpapers. Light foxing throughout. Non-authorial gift inscription dated May 11, 1849 on second flyleaf. A sound copy of a book most often found in poor condition. Boards. The first edition of a very popular textbook that went through many editions and was sold in America and in the United Kingdom. Nicely illustrated, with plates by Wm. Minifie and lithographed by Illman and Sons. The Baltimore Architecture Foundation has a nice mini-bio on Minifie (a copy provided with the book), from which we quote: "Minifie's professional life predated the separation of the architectural and builder's professions. In 1837 he announced himself as an architect and builder, advertising thusly in the Baltimore Sun in 1841. Perhaps he was better known as an educator, teaching drawing and design in Baltimore Central High School by 1845, Principal of the Maryland Institute (now MICA) for many years beginning in 1849, also serving as professor of design and drawing. He belonged to numerous mechanical and scientific societies including the Maryland Academy of Science & Literature, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and the Allston Assocation.".
