Leather. Zustand: Very Good Indeed. None (illustrator). First edition. The first edition of this nicely bound collection of poems from the reign of James II of England to the beginning of the nineteenth century, including poems by Walter Scott, Alexander Pope, and William Cowper. The first edition of this work. Complete in three volumes. These volumes contains poems by various poets, some well-known, and some more obscure. This work was intended to accompany George Ellis's 'Specimens of the Early English Poets'. The series by Ellis concluded with the reign of Charles II, whereas these volumes begin with James his successor. The poems offer a good snapshot of the tastes of the early nineteenth century when it came to poetry. This era saw a change in poetry with the rise of the Romantic movement, which had only just started in 1800. Including works by the poets George Villiers, Aphra Behn, Walter Scott, John Dryden, Joseph Addison, Alexander Pope, Ambrose Phillips, Lady Mary Wortley Montague, Cuthbert Shaw, Oliver Goldsmith, Nathaniel Cotton, William Cowper, and many more. Compiled here by the Romantic English author Robert Southey. Southey held the title of poet laureate for thirty years, from the year 1813. He was also one of the Lake Poets, alongside William Wordsworth and Samuel Taylor Coleridge, though Southey has often been overshadowed by Wordsworth and Coleridge. This work is an octavo. Armorial bookplate of Henry Bronning to the front pastedowns. One page of publisher's adverts to the rear of Volume III. The first edition of Robert Southey's collection of poems by other poets, showing the popular poems of the time. In a half calf binding with marbled paper to the boards. Externally, generally smart. Light rubbing and marks to the spines. Rubbing to the extremities, resulting in some loss of leather. A little rubbing to the boards. Front hinge of Volumes I and III are starting but firm. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright with some scattered spots. Very Good Indeed. book.

An attractively bound set of Percy's influential anthology of English ballads. The work, originally published in 1765, "inaugurated the 'ballad revival', a flood of collections of ancient songs, that proved a source of inspiration to the Romantic poets" (Encyclopaedia Britannica). Percy took the core for the Reliques from an old manuscript collection of poems found in the house of a friend, Humphrey Pitt, at Shifnal in Shropshire. To this nucleus, Percy added other ballads, songs, and romances, many supplied by scholars and antiquarians, including Samuel Johnson, William Shenstone, and Thomas Warton. "Most of Percy's contemporaries welcomed the Reliques as a powerful blast of fresh air. 'Poetry has been absolutely redeemed by it', wrote Wordsworth. Several generations of poets felt its influence: Blake, Coleridge, Keats, Rossetti, Morris, Swinburne, and many lesser lights. Scott, both as novelist and ballad-editor, owed a debt to the book, as did figures such as Bürger, Herder, and the Grimm brothers in Germany, and by extension European Romanticism in general" (ODNB). 3 volumes, large duodecimo (175 x 120 mm). Late 19th-century brown morocco over bevelled boards, spines with five raised bands, second and third compartments lettered in gilt, covers decorated in blind, gilt roll to turn-ins, marbled endpapers, gilt gauffered edges. Title pages printed in red, black, blue, and gold, with engraved vignettes. Mid-20th-century inscribed card mounted to front free endpaper. Bindings lightly rubbed at extremies, a very good set.
