Edition : First Edition (scarce) , Period half gilt brown morocco over marbled boards. Upper board loose, upper and lower parts of the spine are missing., As his predecessor Giovanni Battista Piranesi, Rossini focused on extant antique Roman architecture and excavations in Rome and its environs, and rendered in exquisite detail classical architecture of Rome and its surrounding countryside. In contrast to Piranesi, he made greater use of the bucolic settings in his etchings of Roman ruins. His images of the architectural masterpieces of ancient Rome, including the Pantheon, the Coliseum, the Appian Way.etc., have greatly influenced architects, artists, writers, and other connoisseurs of Roman culture up to the present day. The figures give a contemporary feel to the antiquities and were worked on by the artist Bartolomeo Pinelli. , Size : Elephant oblong Folio, Bound without the title as so often. 101 fine engraved plates of Rome, plates complete. All plates are unnumbered thus first edition as the later edition of 1829 has the plates numbered. First and last plates slightly creased otherwise a near fine example of this scarce First Edition work by Rossini. The plates are clean and crisp.

Sheet size (double-page): c.725 x 520 mm (or the reverse). Watermarks examined include the shield with sword and fleur-de-lys (Robison 61), a fleur-de-lys with initials (Robison 20 / 21), a fleur-de-lys within a single circle (Robison 18 / 19) however the majority of those present appear to be the fleur-de-lys within a double circle (Robison 33 / 35). Full contemporary polished calf, rebacked, boards with triple-ruled borders and floral corner pieces in gilt, banded spines with gilt tooling and black leather label with gilt title in nine compartments, turn-ins tooled in gilt, marbled endpapers and edges. Repairs to edges and corners. An excellent example. MP22 Piranesi's most important work: more than 200 plates in a very early state. With Ducal provenance. This work, which required eight years of careful study and excavation by Piranesi, established his reputation as the leading protagonist of Roman archaeology when it first appeared in 1756. His aim, as with all his archaeological publications, was both to record the vanishing past for scholars and to inspire contemporary designers to emulate the achievements of ancient Rome. Volume I explains the urban structure of ancient Rome in terms of its walls, defences and aqueducts as well as its public monuments. Volumes II - III include the plans of the Camera Sepolcrali, and are devoted to the extensive remains of sepulchres around Rome. Volume IV concentrates on the heroic feats of Roman engineering in the form of bridges and monumental structures such as the Curia Hostilia, the substructure of the Temple of Claudius, Hadrian's mausoleum (the Castel Sant'Angelo), and the Theatre of Marcellus. As John Wilton-Ely notes, the work includes plates by or after other artists, chiefly in volumes II and III. 'The double-page engraved titles of volumes 2 and 3 of Piranesi's Le Antichità Romane display the artist as the most visionary of classical archaeologists. Imaginative and fascinating in all their myriad detail, these two 'restored' views of the great Roman Appian Way have all the overwhelming effect of the modern canyons of New York City, but embellished with classical finials and endless ornament'. (Princeton University, In Search of Art: The English Grand Tour exhibition). 'After two hundred years, the work still remains the vastest picture book of buildings and antiquities in Rome. Almost half the plates record things that have since vanished or been further damaged. It is the first book that attempted to reassemble objects that had been found and then scattered. The big plate of the Roman water system was the first painstaking reconstruction of far flung and complicated ruins, and alone cost him six months of drawing, digging and measuring. This book also went farther than previous attempts to interpret ancient remains in the light of ancient texts, and especially in the light of Vitruvius' description of Roman engineering practice'. (A. Hyatt Mayor, Piranesi, pg. 12). With the two letters to Charlemont Avviso al publico dated 25 August 1756 and A Milord Febbraio 1757. This copy retains the rare Imprimatur leaf ( 2) bound after the Prefazione with the list of published titles by Piranesi to the verso; the Imprimatur is dated '25 Gennaro 1756'. Piranesi's publications listed on the verso of the leaf (and available at the same booksellers 'Bouchard e Gravier') consist of the Vedute di Roma, the Prospettive. con varii grotteschi, the Carceri, the Vedute di Antichita Romane and the Trofei. Hind pp. 83 - 84; Wilton-Ely pp. 327 - 582; Millard 88.

Erstausgabe
Edition : First Paris Edition., Loose, no binding. , Very good examples of Piranesi?s monumental work comprising 8 years of studying the ?urban structure of ancient Rome in terms of its walls, defenses and aqueducts as well as its civic and religious monuments? (Wilton-Ely, 328). Giovanni Battista Piranesi (1720 ? 1778) was a prominent Italian Classical archaeologist, architect, and artist, famous for his etchings of Rome. Although he was the son of a stonemason and studied structural and hydraulic engineering, Piranesi is best remembered for his monumental etchings, which demonstrate this lifelong interest in architecture and design. As passionate about architecture was, he also about Rome and Roman culture, and in Piranesi: The Complete Etchings, John Wilton-Ely notes that Le Antichità Romane, first published in 1756, established Piranesi as a ?leading protagonist of Roman archaeology? (327). In Le Antichità Romane, Piranesi set out to ?apply a completely new system of archaeological inquiry to the study of the remains of antiquity? (Wilton-Ely, 328). With the publication of this 4-volume work, Piranesi sought to ?develop a whole new range of specialized illustration in order to reveal aspects of antiquity which had hitherto been largely neglected. His aim, as with all his archeological publications, was two-fold?to record the vanishing past for scholars and to inspire contemporary designers to emulate the achievements of the past? (Wilton-Ely, 327). Volumes 2 and 3 ?are devoted to the extensive remains of tombs and funerary monuments around Rome? (Wilton-Ely 328). In the fourth volume, Piranesi expounds ?the heroic feats of Roman engineering represented by bridges and monumental structures like the Curia Hostilia (the substructure of the Temple of Claudius), Hadrian?s Mausoleum (the Castel Sant?Angelo), and the Theatre of Marcellus. In the exaggerated scale and the concern with technology of these latter works, there are already signs of Piranesi?s attempts to counteract the increasing claims for the superiority of Greek art and architecture being made by Winckelmann and Laugier? (Wilton-Ely 328). The plates of the Antichità, as Wilton-Ely notes, also include works by other artists such as Francesco Bianchini and Girolomo Rossi (327-8). This edition was re-published by Piranesi?s son Francesco in 1803., Size : Large Folio. , Vol. 2 with 45 plates, lacking 18: I, II, IX, X, XIII, XV, XVI, XXII, XXV, XXXII, XXXIII, XXXV, XLII, XLIV, XLVI, LVI, LX, LXIII. Vol. 4 with 53, including additional unnumbered plate particular to 2nd edition, lacking 5: II, IV, XVI, XVIII, XXI. , Volume : Three volumes., Ex-Libris Edward Francis Searles, an architect and interior designer of the late 19th to early 20th century., References : John Wilton-Ely, Piranesi: The Complete Etchings, vol. 1, pp. 327-583 Some pages with spotting or minor foxing to wide margins. Rome: Negozio Scudellari & Rossini, 1829. Large folio, contemporary half morocco, red morocco title label on front board; title, 1p. catalogue of Rossini's publications and 101 etched plates. Wear to spine, boards faded. An extensive record of the buildings of Rome at the beginning of the 19th century, the work of Luigi Rossini (1790-1857) an architect and etcher. Although clearly influenced by Piranesi, Rossini wanted to show the buildings in the context of contemporary Rome; therefore he collaborated with Roman artist Bartolomeo Pinelli (1771-1835), whose illustrations of the street life of the city were used as staffage for the archtecture. These figures included the Grand Tourists, washerwomen, monks & priests, ferrymen & fishermen and, under the Arch of Septimus Severus, knife-fighters. A monumental work.

Second Paris Edition. 505 x 720 mm. (20 x 28 1/4"). Plate 39 from volume II of "Le Antichità Romane," with a 375 x 500 mm. (14 3/4 x 19 1/2") etching of an external view of the remains of a columbarium tomb which possibly belonged to the Augusto family. Focillon 263; Wilton-Ely 398. â Scattered mild foxing to the (generous) margins, faint vertical crease to center, but a fine specimen, clean, fresh, and rather bright, with a rich impression of the plate. This is a handsome etching showing an external view of burial chambers within a mausoleum believed to belong to the family of the Roman emperor Augustus, from the second Paris edition of Piranesi's masterful "Roman Antiquities." Gaius Octavius Augustus (63 B.C. - 14 A.D.) became the first emperor of Rome in 27 B.C. and soon undertook an ambitious building program, constructing a forum, temples, a mausoleum, triumphal arches, and other monuments. Many of these buildings, including the mausoleum, were ransacked and damaged by the pillaging Visigoths in 410, and by the time our artist came to the city, they had fallen into ruin. Italian artist Giovanni Battista (or Giambattista) Piranesi (1720-78) studied in Venice, where he was influenced by Tiepolo's topographical and antiquarian engravings, before opening a print shop in Rome. There, he produced the etchings of Roman views, buildings, and ruins that made him famous. Informed by his experience in Venice and his study of the works of Marco Ricci and particularly Giovanni Paolo Panini, he appreciated not only the engineering of the ancient buildings but also the poetic aspects of the ruins. His manipulations of scale and his scientific distribution of light and shade helped to create a striking effect. A number of the Views are notable for depicting human figures whose poverty, lameness, apparent drunkenness, and other visible flaws appear to echo the decay of the ruins; we see such an instance in the present plate, where a well-dressed young tourist is besieged by three beggars. This is consistent with a familiar trope of Renaissance literature, in which the ruins of Rome are lamented as a metaphor for the imperfection and transience of human existence. Throughout his lifetime, Piranesi created numerous prints depicting the Eternal City that were widely collected, including by gentlemen on the Grand Tour.
