To volume II there is a frontispiece and five plates. 8vo, pp. [vi], 578; with an engraved frontispiece; in contemporary speckled calf, gilt, spine gilt (a little rubbed, joints slightly cracked, lacks label). First edition: a substantial biography, with much new information, written at the suggestion of Warburton, to whose collection of Pope's manuscripts Ruffhead was given access. Warburton read the proofs of this book, and made corrections. Owen Ruffhead (ca. 1723-1769) grew up in London, where his father was a baker; the proceeds of a winning lottery ticket were used to give him a good education, and he became a lawyer. His venture into literary biography had a mixed reception; Samuel Johnson famously remarked that Ruffhead 'knew nothing of Pope and nothing of poetry'. Despite such opinions, the syndicate of booksellers who published this biography quickly reprinted it in quarto to accompany a new four-volume collected edition of Pope's works. The frontispiece depicts a commemorative monument erected by Warburton in 1761.

Leather. Zustand: Very Good. None (illustrator). A scarce set of The Works of Alexander Pope, Esq. in Verse and Prose with a Selection of Explanatory Notes and Account of his Life by Dr. Johnson First edition thus. Seemingly the first edition to contain solely the notes of Samuel Johnson and The Life of the Author in this form. In eight volumes complete. With an engraved portrait of Pope to frontispiece to volume one. 'In this edition, it has been attempted to give (what the Public has long demanded) a correct text of Pope's works, in which the reader's attention is not divided, or his feelings interrupted, by the discordance of critical disputes and fanciful opinions, such Notes only having been preserved as are necessary to explain ambiguities in the text, or afford some information respecting the characters. The notes of Pope himself, being of this description, are generally retained. To the Life, written by Dr. Johnson, several particulars have been added from subsequent biographers.' London, December 1811. Alexander Pope (1688 - 1744) was an 18th-century English poet, best known for his satirical verse and for his translation of Homer. Famous for his use of the heroic couplet, he is the third-most frequently quoted writer in The Oxford Dictionary of Quotations, after Shakespeare and Tennyson. Samuel Johnson (1709 - 1784), often referred to as Dr Johnson, was an English writer who made lasting contributions to English literature as a poet, essayist, moralist, literary critic, biographer, editor and lexicographer. In straight-grain morocco bindings. Externally, generally smart but with slight wear to extremities and odd marks to boards. Four hinges strained. Internally, firmly bound. Bright but with offsetting to title to volume one, occasional spotting and handling marks. Very Good. book.

12mo, pp. [iv], 151; blank inner margins of a few leaves at the beginning and end neatly restored, not affecting the text, otherwise a good copy, complete with the half-title; in recent marbled boards, dark brown morocco spine, spine gilt, light brown leather label. First edition: an account of Pope for young readers, or an otherwise unsophisticated audience; the author, of whom little is known, produced a number of similar biographies, including lives of Swift, Marlborough, and Frederick the Great, and also works of popular history and topography, such as one on London Bridge, and one on the Pizarro's conquest of Peru. Dilworth's books were often reprinted, but shortly after 1760 his name stops appearing on new works, and it seems likely that he had died. ESTC reports a copy at Princeton with a final leaf of advertisements, but this does not appear in other copies, and is clearly not required.

12mo, pp. [ii], 235; [iv], 235; an exceptionally attractive copy in contemporary (Irish?) light calf, spines with red, blue and green morocco labels. First Dublin edition: originally published in London earlier the same year. This is a substantial biography, with much new information, written at the suggestion of Warburton, to whose collection of Pope's manuscripts Ruffhead was given access. This copy lacks the frontispiece in volume I, which shows the monument to Pope erected by Warburton. Although separately published, it is clear that this copy was once bound as part of a set of the works: the labels read 'Pope's Works', and number these two volumes XVI and XVII. Provenance. Early inscription of 'J. Postlethwaite' in both volumes.
