The 'Mechanik' contains an anatomical discussion of the joints used in walking and running, measurements made on living subjects, and a mathematical theory relating the length and duration of a step to anatomical parameters. Among other results, the work corrected misconceptions about posture and recommended its conclusions to the attention to artists. The introduction suggests the development of a walking machine for traversing rough terrain. Probably unique in the annals of anatomical illustration are the four plates printed directly from the original bones.
