Hardcover. Zustand: Good. 1st Edition. Extensive work on mining in Cornwall written and published by William Pryce (apothacery, surgeon, and share-owner in Dolcoath mine) of Redruth, Cornwall. Covers the geology, extraction processes, machinery, management and structure of mines (including illnesses caused to miners and a proposal for a hospital) as well as tables on industry and trade. [Xxxvi], xiv, [2], 331, engraved copper-plate portrait of the author inserted at the front, includes dedication to His Royal Highness, George, Prince of Wales and Duke of Cornwall, list of subscribers, directions to the binder, preface and contents before the 14 page introduction. Further seven inserted plates, three of which are folding, and two folding letterpress tables showing plans of mines, engines, smelting processes etc. Many of these are dedicated to influential persons in Cornwall, e.g. John Price, High Sheriff; William Lemon, M. P.; Revd. Francis Cole. Further tables within the text, 10 pages of tables at the rear before the appendix (which includes a discussion of Watt's steam engine) and an explanation of terms. First Edition. Bound in speckled calf covered boards with decoration to board edges, five raised bands, red label with gilt titles to spine. folio. Hinges cracked, cords holding, leather worn and label partly missing, title page and portrait dirty, some finger marks but pages otherwise clean, some very light foxing, all plates present, text-block strong. Good condition.
