Buch
Two works bound uniformly comprising the Works (4 vols.) and the Life (2 vols.). 8vo. (21.5 x 13.5 cm). Contemporary full calf, spines with raised bands and richly gilt in compartments, complementary blue and tan morocco labels, marbled endpapers and edges. 4 engraved title-pages (to each volume of the Works), engraved portrait frontispiece, and engraved facsimile of Goldsmith's handwriting. Ex libris Ernest Augustus Earl of Lisburne, with his armorial book-plate to front pastedowns. Scattered foxing to prelims and plates, contents clean, bindings lightly rubbed along extremities, upper joint of vol.1 of the Life cracked but holding firm, the numbering labels on three volumes of the Works out of order, but overall a very good set in attractive period bindings. Prior's chief works were biographies. His Memoir of the Life and Character of Edmund Burke (1824) ran to several editions and was quite well regarded. His Life of Oliver Goldsmith (2 vols., 1837) and his Miscellaneous Works of Goldsmith (4 vols., 1837) were assiduously compiled. When John Forster (1812 1876) brought out The Life and Adventures of Oliver Goldsmith (1848) he was accused by Prior of wholesale plagiarism, an accusation which Forster consistently denied. Washington Irving, in his Life of Goldsmith (1849), admitted his obligations to 'the indefatigable Prior', who none the less denounced him in Goldsmith's Statue (ODNB).
