pl. veau blond époque, dos à filets dorés, p. de t. rouge, coiffe inf. lég. usée. Premiers et derniers ff. lég. brunis en marge sinon bon exemplaire. The definitive edition published just after his death. Edmund Hoyle (1672-1769), a London barrister who, by 1741, was giving lessons in whist-playing. His famous "Short treatise on the game of whist", was first printed in 1742. By 1748 different other manuals on card games were amalgamated into a collected edition. While for many years every genuine copy of Hoyle bore his signature, from the 15th edition (1770) this was reproduced from a woodblock, as Hoyle died in 1769. The phrase "according to Hoyle" came into the language as a reflection of his generally-perceived authority on the subject. ESTC n°T88031. in 12, de XII-216pp.,
