Zustand: Acceptable. Most items will be dispatched the same or the next working day. This book has lost the title page (hence only "acceptable" condition) and therefore lacks date remarks, but this seems to be of the Godwin edition having a matching frontispiece and 180 pp. Has an inscription 1878 so is certainly prior to this date. Contempory half leather binding. Despite the lack of some front matter, the book remains sound with a few pages having small nicks to margins and one or two closed tears not troubling reading. Contents are clear with only minor thumbing.

12mo, engraved frontispiece (by J. Hopwood after W. Hopwood; offset onto title) and pp. [iv], 179, [1] advertisements; some leaves beginning to spring from the binding; in contemporary sheep, worn, especially on spine. First edition of this highly successful work, running to five editions at least (all published by the Godwins), and frequently reprinted throughout the century. This was one of the very few works substantially written by Mary Lamb: of the ten improving stories for children here printed, she wrote seven and her brother Charles wrote only three. Provenance. Ownership inscription on title page of Louisa Gresley, Shenstone House, 1810; and (a little more specifically) on the endpaper as L.E. Gresley, Shenstone House, November 1st 1810. This is presumably Louisa Elizabeth Gresley, daughter of the Rev. William Gresley, rector of Seale (now called Netherseal) near Ashby-de-la-Zouch, Leicestershire: in 1825 she married Spencer Madan, vicar of Batheaston, and she died in 1861 at the age of 60 - she would thus have been about nine years old when she owned this book, although her handwriting looks older.
