A clean set with no previous owners' markings or inscriptions. Untrimmed edges a little dusty and a few pages have creases to corners. Occasional light foxing and soiling, mainly to prelims. Small embroidery thread label stuck to foot of p.514 of Vil. I, not affecting text. Bindings all a trifle short with untrimmed lower edge protruding by up to 1cm. Spines and boards rather worn and scuffed with some loss to top of Vol. I and a few minor cracks to hinges although bindings still good and strong. Erstausgabe
4 vols. 4to. Fronts, plus 225 plates, maps and charts (of 227), many folding; list of subscribers. Contemp. mottled calf, brown labels; a small amount of restoration. Bookplates of John Monins. A FINE set. FIRST EDITION. It is not uncommon to find copies with fewer plates than called for. The missing plates in this copy (from vol. II: IX, XLIV and LXXII) were clearly never bound in. Also in vol. II, Plates XXI & XXII are bound in vol. III and there are two plates lettered LXIX. Although this extensive collection was edited by John Green, it is generally known as Astley's Voyages and Travels after its publisher. Included are the voyages of George Roberts to Bermuda (1721); Atkins to Guinea, Brazil and the West Indies (1721); Smith to Guinea (1726); also the early European settlements in southern Africa, as well as an abridged English translation of du Halde's account of China. One of the best illustrated works of its kind.
