Folio. 3 parts in 1 vol. Title-page printed in red and black. With woodcut printer's device on last page; numerous woodcut diagrams and tables throughout. Contemporary full brown calf, covers stamped with oxydized gilt borders and supralibros; spine with handwritten title. A rare and important astronomical work, this copy closely studied and annotated at a Bohemian monastery in spite of the fact that the author had been banned by Rome. - This is the first edition of the collected works by Johann Schöner (1477-1547), mathematician, astronomer, cartographer, and scientific instrument maker from Karlstadt, in Bavaria. Schöner was a correspondent of Nicolaus Copernicus and in 1526 became the first professor of mathematics at the Nuremberg Aegidianum, the school run by Philipp Melanchthon. His most illustrious pupil was Georg Joachim Rheticus, who in the "Narratio prima" (1540, dedicated to Schöner) announced Copernicus's discoveries. Like Regiomontanus, Schöner set up a press in his own home and from there published works of mathematical and astronomical interest, as well as the first printed terrestrial globe to name the recently discovered continent of America. - The "Opera mathematica" was published posthumously by Schöner's son Andreas and contains a representative sample of Schöner's wide and diverse interests, and a digest of some of his separately published works, most of which are extremely rare. The whole volume is introduced by a preface by Melanchthon himself, who had already, in 1536, contributed the foreword to the "Tabulae astronomicae" (here forming part II): tables based on those computed initially by Regiomontanus, with a selection of other material originally written by Regiomontanus. The section entitled "Coelestis globi compositio" contains an important catalogue of stars taken from Copernicus's "De revolutionibus", but for which Schöner calculated the positions for the year 1550. Part III possibly contains the most important section, which describes and illustrates eleven instruments, under the title "Aequatorium Astronomicum", a revised and enlarged version of a work which first appeared in 1521. It contains the earliest collection of printed equatoria diagrams, as well further Copernican material adapted by Schöner, and probably inspired Peter Apian's "Astronomicum Caesareum". - The text is illustrated by an elaborate series of charts which were intended to be assembled into volvelles, although in this copy (as is common almost without exception) the movable parts are missing. Blank lower quarter of title-page remargined. Binding somewhat rubbed; extremeties bumped and chipped; lacks ties. - Formerly in the Premonstratensian Teplá Abbey in Bohemia with the library's handwritten ownership, dated 1608, on the title-page, stricken out by a later hand with the note "Author prohibitus ex Conc. Trid."; also with traces of an erased later ownership, dated 1713. First numbered page has early acquisition note of "P. Georgius Staumpffl" (Stampfel), friar and conventual at Teplá and a native of Müglitz (Mohelnice) in Moravia, repeated as an ownership on front pastedown with additional references to various chapters of the book; several annotations, mostly by the same hand, throughout the volume. Latterly in a French private collection with a few pencil annotations in French by a 20th century hand. - VD 16, S 3465. BM-STC German 792. Adams S 678, 685. Houzeau/Lancaster 2388. Zinner 2033. Buch Erstausgabe
Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. 1st Edition. Nuremberg: Johann Montanus & Ulrich Neuber, 1551. Folio ( 320 x 200mm) , 3 Parts in one volume, Early Citron Morocco Gilt, Gilt Crest of the Duke of Devonshire on Upper and Lower Covers, title printed in red and black, woodcut ornament on title-page, portrait of the author, preface by Philipp Melanchthon, numerous woodcut illustrations throughout concerning geographical, navigational and astronomical subjects, astronomical instruments and Schoner s celebrated celestial and terrestrial globes, with 11 woodcut volvelles and 10 leaves with 34 printed discs for use on the volvelles. A Splendid complete copy of this extremely scarce work. The First Edition of Shoner s most important work, his collected Astronomical works published after his death in 1547. This includes the Aequatorium Astronomicum of 1521 the earliest works to contain moveable discs. This original edition, of which there is only one surviving copy, published on his own press at Bamberg, was the inspiration for Peter Apian s extraordinary Astronomicom Caesareum of 1540. Shoner assembled a printing shop in his house in Bamberg. He himself set the type, carved the woodblocks for the illustrations, and bound the finished product. He also made his own globes and astronomical instruments. DSB Johann Shoner, astrologer, astronomer, geographer, physician and author of forty-six books on these subjects was born in Carlstadt, Franconia in 1477 and received an education at Erfurt. He later taught at the Melanchthon Gymnasium in Nuremberg where he constructed a celestial globe for the Duke of Saxony, Johann Friedrich the Magnanimous (1503- 1554). This globe was constructed with the help of Georg Spalatin and represents a revision and correction of the known earlier globes. His terrestrial globe of 1515, after Martin Waldseemuller was the first printed globe to name the recently discovered continent of America, and his globe of 1524 was the first to describe Ferdinand Magellan s circumnavigation. Schoner s celestial globe of 1533 is the oldest surviving printed celestial globe and is on display at the Science Museum in London. He is considered the most influential early globe maker, establishing Nuremberg as the European centre of the craft, and creating the idea of pairing celestial and terrestrial globes. The Opera Mathematica opens with two extensive treatises , Isagodes Astralogiae Iudiciariae and the Tabulae Astronomicae . The four following treatises concern the composition and use of celestial and terrestial globes. Schoner s star catalogue, in the section Coelestis Globi Compositio is an adaptioon of the star list published in 1543 by Nicolaus Copernicus in his De Revolutionibus . The section De Usu Globis Terrestris contains a splendid engraving of the author s globe of 1520. The text refers to the voyages of Vespucci and mentions that the upper indies had been named Americus after him. The voyages of Columbus, Marco Polo, Ferdinand Magellan are discussed and Schoner also mentions Cuba, Florida, Mexico, Darien, Jamaica and North America, referred to as Parias. Three chapters of this work are given entirely to discoveries in the Western Hemisphere, among them Brasiliae novae terrae annotation. The Opera Mathematica is Schoner s magnum opus encapsulating all his theories and most important works. Perhaps the most influential of the Renaissance scholars, he is responsible for sending the Wittenberg professor, Rheticus to visit Copernicus and was instrumental in the publishing of De Revolutionibus . The first printed celestial globe was made in Schoner s workshop in 1515 and he is remembered as one of the most important sixteenth century astronomers and globe makers. A crater on Mars is named in his honour. This is a particularly splendid copy of the Opera Mathematica , a work that is exceedingly scarce and the few copies that have appeared in the last fifty years have often lacked the important volvelles. Campbell, "Bede [St Bede, Bæda, known as the Venerable Bede] (673/4-735)". This edition was first published in Cologne in 1612, these volumes are the second edition printed there. Saint Bede is remembered for his contributions to ecclesiastical and British historical writings. Bede wrote analytically, and was fascinated by time and the creation of life as they were written about in early Christian sources. The sources available to him included Eusebius of Caesarea, Orosius, Eutropius, and the earlier British historian, Gildas. Historians label his Historia Ecclesiastica Anglis Gentorum as the greatest culmination of his writings, and some point out that it helped to create the sense of a national English identity, at a time when the Angles and the Saxons were still forging intertribal unity. His history of Christianity in Britain largely focuses on the years 597-731, after a brief explanation of Christianity in Roman-controlled Britain. Bede wrote in his own autobiography that his life was devoted to "learning and letters", and he was well-beloved in his own time and long after (including by Britain's first king, Alfred), which is largely why most of his work survives today. His translations of various religious histories and lives of the Saints into Latin made these works accessible to his fellow monks, and Bede even did an Old English translation of St. John's Gospel, which, had it survived, would be the earliest lengthy work of prose in English. Bede was an author who was influenced greatly by the writers of Late Antiquity, and his career is one of the most significant among those who wrote during the early Middle Ages. With a small, later bookplate and an 18th century ownership mark (Signet Library) on each front pastedown. No other institutional markings. Boards with a few small spots of wear and yellowing, overall a lovely set.

[32], 553, [1 blank] pp.Second and best edition of the collected works on applied mathematics, by André Tacquet (1612-1660), a Belgian Jesuit scientist and professor in mathematics at Louvain and Antwerp. It is richly illustrated with mathemical drawings concerning the applications of perspective and with projections of cylinders, rings and circles. The present collected works, published posthumously by Tacquet's pupil Simone Laurentio Veterani, includes several works published here for the first time, namely his works on astronomy and on optics. The additional work on military engineering also is of interest, nicely illustrated with plans of fortifications and strongholds. Tacquet's works are exemplary text books, clearly demonstrating the theory, and also offering useful exercises for the pupils.Fine copy of a rare work in an interesting contemporary binding.l De Backer & Sommervogel II, col. 616; DSB XIII, p. 236; Houzeau & Lancaster 3406; Poggendorff II, p. 1064 ; not in STCV.
