The War in America papers concern the War of 1812 and are primarily naval; with the Royal Navy on the Great Lakes and Lake Champlain. Of particular interest are extracts of the proceedings of the court martial of Captain Barclay and others resulting from the Battle of Lake Erie, September 1813. The slavery papers from 1813 to 1814 containing extracts of treaties between Britain and European countries give an overview of the gradual abolishment of the slave trade. Correspondents include the Duke of Wellington, Viscount Castlereagh, Henry Wellesley, and Earl Bathurst. The Genoa, Naples and Italy papers relate to risings against the French in 1814 with much of the correspondence by Lord Bentinek. The material on the Napoleon Wars deals with the period between The Treaty of Paris in 1814 and the Hundred Days campaign of 1815. The last correspondence is between Viscount Castlereagh and Earl of Clancarty, the month before the Battle of Waterloo in June, 1815. An wealth of contemporary material on a critical period in British and European history.

First edition, presentation copy to his close friend, the former diplomat John Hookham Frere (1769-1846) inscribed in a secretarial hand on the half-title "The Right Honble J. H. Frere". The political and personal lives of Frere and Canning were closely entwined. The pair formed a lifelong friendship at Eton. Canning was elected to parliament in 1793 and Frere in 1796. In 1797, the pair co-wrote the pro-government Anti-Jacobin. Frere moved through several diplomatic posts in the first decade of the century - Lisbon (1800), Madrid (1802), Berlin (1807), and Spanish Supreme Central Junta (1808). Military upset in Spain ended his political and diplomatic career. Canning's career suffered no such abrupt end, rising from paymaster of the forces in 1800 to prime minister in 1827. At the time of this publication, he was foreign secretary. His speech, one of the most important of his career, was concerned with great power politics and military action in Spain and would have been of special interest to Frere. The Congress of Verona had met in 1823 and was forced to decide whether to intervene in Spain to quell a revolt. "France, with Chateaubriand as chief minister, was anxious to intervene on her own account, and this Canning could not prevent. After the French invasion in April, Canning made a powerful speech hostile to France and sympathetic to Spain, announcing that Britain would be neutral and publishing a large selection of diplomatic correspondence to justify his policy. When he came to answer his critics, he called himself 'an enthusiast for national independence', but stressed the blessings that Britain derived from remaining at peace. He won the vote by 372 to 20" (ODNB). Goldsmiths'-Kress 23976. Octavo. Uncut, sewn into yellow paper wrappers with manuscript title to spine (wrappers now loose). Wrappers worn, book firm with sewing holding, contents a little spotted. A very good copy.

[2], 76 pp.Compilation of observational governmental reports on various outbreaks of the bubonic plague in the Middle East, Persia and Egypt between 1853 and 1877. As stated in the introduction, this publication was compiled to study the epidemic in detail, in the hope that such learning might benefit Great Britain in the event of an outbreak of the plague in its own territories. The information in these reports proved to be of value during the intense study of the plague in the 1890s, which led to the identification of the disease s origin in 1894. The compilation comprises three parts: the first contains extracts from reports of the medical officers of the local government board, the second is a memorandum by Mr. Netten Radcliffe and the last contains a few papers considering the medical aspects of quarantine.Binding worn at the edges and the paper spine damaged at the head and foot. With the upper corner of the first few pages slightly soiled, but still in good condition.l Creighton, A history of epidemics in Britain (1965), I, p. 162; Ethnographic plague: configuring disease on the Chinese-Russian frontier, p. 166; Histories of post-mortem contagion: infectious corpses and contested burials, p. 25.
