348 x 215 mm. (13 3/4 x 8 1/2"). xiii, [1], 441, [3] pp.Introduction by William Rose Benét. Attractive recent quarter calf over marbled boards, raised bands, green morocco label. With 16 lithographic plates (one beginning each section of the two poems) by Carlotta Petrina. Quarto-Millenary 84. â Two-inch closed tear in one bottom margin, otherwise a virtually perfect copy--altogether clean and bright internally, in an unworn binding. This handsomely printed and illustrated edition of Milton's masterpiece is the first work the renowned San Francisco typographer and printer John Henry Nash created after his brief "retirement" in April of 1936. At the age of 65, Nash (1871-1947) was then a giant in his field; as ANB says, his "near technical perfection and his use of various typefaces, ornaments, and high-quality materials was esteemed by those who appreciated the craftsmanship involved in such work." He "became the clear leader of his profession in the San Francisco area and thereby helped elevate fine printing to an art form." Unfortunately, the Depression had hit the printing business hard, and Nash's patrons no longer had the funds for extravagant printing projects. His biographer Robert Harlan notes that "the typographical design of this work is unusually austere," but that this "reflected accurately Nash's state of mind." It also evokes the spirit of the Doves Press, with beautiful type, unadorned, surrounded by generous margins. Illustrator Carlotta K. Petrina (1901-97) received a Guggenheim Fellowship to fund her creation of the lithographs for the present book. While she was in the midst of the work, her husband was killed in an automobile accident, a tragedy that no doubt influenced the mournful tone of her illustrations. Milton scholars Wendy Furman-Adams and Virginia James Tufte wrote of her work: "of all Milton's visual interpreters, Petrina is the artist for whom Paradise is most decisively and tragically LOST. And it is Eve who bears the heaviest weight of grief and expiation." Typically, if a private press book like this has been rebound, the value of the volume is decreased, but this item is an exception, both because the original binding of cloth-backed boards is less attractive than what is offered here, and also because it is normally found in ratty condition. No. 1,185 of 1,500 copies. SIGNED in the colophon by the illustrator.

One of 1,500 copies. 230 x 145 mm. (9 x 5 5/8"). With subscribers' list in first volume. Two volumes. Edited by Thomas Newton. EXCEPTIONALLY PRETTY OLIVE GREEN STRAIGHT GRAIN MOROCCO, HANDSOMELY GILT, for Sotheran ("H. Sotheran & Co." printed in gilt on front turn-in), covers panelled with multiple straight and stippled borders, scrolling floral cornerpieces, six mounds of massed tools on the inner side of the central frame (two on each side, and one at head and foot), raised bands, spine compartments elaborately gilt in antique style with scrolled foliate cornerpieces between double ruled borders and centerpiece star of small tools, very ornate inner dentelles, all edges gilt. Gaskell 4, 5; Brunet III, 1730; Graesse IV, 529. â Backstrips faded to an attractive brown (as usual with green morocco), otherwise only very trivial imperfections: AN EXTREMELY FINE COPY, VIRTUALLY IMMACULATE INTERNALLY, AND IN AN UNWORN, HANDSOMELY DECORATED BINDING. This is a very handsomely bound copy of the third product of the Baskerville Press, considered to be one of its most attractive smaller format books. Aside from the obvious value of Milton's great text, the publication is also of importance for what its publisher says in the preface. After allowing that he has reaped "great satisfaction" over the positive reception of his Virgil, the press' beautiful first book, Baskerville spells out the aims that guided his and, afterwards, many another special press: "It is not my desire to print many books," he says, "but such only, as are books of consequence, of intrinsic merit, or established reputation, and which the public may be pleased to see in an elegant dress, and to purchase at such a price, as will repay the extraordinary care and expense that must necessarily be bestowed upon them." In addition to "Paradise Regain'd," the second volume here also contains "Samson Agonistes," "Poems on Several Occasions," a selection of sonnets and psalms, and a biographical introduction. Our remarkably well-preserved copy comes from the second state of the text (with the printing error on page 135 corrected).

Two works in one vol.; 8vo (16.5 x 11 cm); bookplate to front pastedown; [Paradise Lost] second edition; 12 parts, engraved portrait frontispiece, woodcut initial p.2, old cataloguing notes in pencil to front free endpaper recto, ownership inscription to title page, MS poem in pen to frontispiece upper margin in a contemporary hand, head margin cropped throughout with occasional loss to headlines and page numbers, foxing and areas of darker toning, pp.229-230 corner tear, pp.103, 173 and 176 incorrectly paginated 101, 171 and 174 respectively, lacking Latin prefatory poem by 'S.M' and final bank leaf; [Paradise Regain'd] second edition; 4 parts, license to A1 verso, light foxing throughout, p.95 misnumbered 45, pp. 126 and 127 numbered 129 and 130 respectively, lacking ads; later calf, spine gilt in compartments, corners and boards slightly rubbed, front joint cracked but holding; [6], 333, [1]; 132pp. The revised, second edition of Paradise Lost, the last literary project Milton completed before his death in November 1674. By reorganising the work into 12 books, Milton consciously adopted the division used by Virgil in the Aeneid, making 'explicit the parallel with the epics of classical antiquity' to which he had always aspired (ODNB). With the oft omitted frontispiece portrait of Milton by William Dolle, as well as the prefatory note on 'The Verse' making the case for 'English Heroic Verse without Rime, as that of Homer in Greek, and of Virgil in Latin', and the short commendatory poem by Milton's friend, the noted metaphysical poet and satirist Andrew Marvel, defending his 'sublime' use of blank verse. The frontispiece annotated in a seventeenth century hand with an early rendering of John Dryden's eulogistic Epigram on Milton: 'Three poets in three distant lands born, Greece, Italy and England did adorn: The first in loftiness of thought surpast; The next in majesty; in both the last: The force of Nature could no further go: To make a Third, she joyn'd the former Two'. Dryden's lines first appeared in print in the illustrated fourth edition of Lost published in 1688. The dated ownership inscription for J. Vardille(?) 1783 to the title page could suggest a connection to the female poet Anna Jane Vardill (1781-1852), known for her Romantic sonnets and precocious translations of Anacreon. Her The Rights of Woman makes passing reference to Paradise Lost 'Satan, the origin of ill, Says Milton shew'd consummate skill' suggesting Vardille was at the very least familiar with the text. Bound with the second edition of Paradise Regain'd, apparently produced after Milton showed the unpublished manuscript of Lost to his friend the Quaker Thomas Ellwood, who remarked that 'thou hast said much here of Paradise Lost, but what hast thou to say of Paradise Found?' (Masson, 6.496). More pacifistic in tone, Regain'd was published together with Milton's closet drama Samson Agonistes. Softcover. Zustand: Sehr gut. A masterpiece by The Doves Press and a great example of contemporary typography and book design. Very attractive copies of 300 each printed on paper from a total edition of 322 copies (22 on vellum each). ¶ Description: Two volumes. Original full limp vellum with title in gilt on spine. Octavo: 24 × 17 cm; pp. 386, [1]. 343, [1]. Printed in black, red and blue on Doves handmade paper, top edge cut, fore and lower edges trimmed. Inner pastedown stamped 'The Doves Bindery'. ¶ Provenance: From the collection of Max Morgenstern(1883-1946), sold by his heirs in 2016. ¶ Ref.: Cobden-Sanderson 1922, 136-37; Tidcombe DP5, DP7 ¶ Condition: The binding next to few, natural irregularities in the grain of the vellum, very good. No browning to endpapers. Internally with occasional spotting to margins of a few leaves, but otherwise very fine copies. ¶ Notes: 'Paradise Lost' was the first major undertaking of the Press, larger than the first four books put together, and the Press's reputation would rest upon it. In 'Paradise Lost', Cobden-Sanderson produced his ideal book, a perfect example of what, in 1892, he said a book should be. The opening page is perhaps the finest of any Doves Press book (Tidcombe 2002, 37-41). It was designed by Edward Johnston and cut in wood by C. E. Keates. The four-line initials of books 2-12, in red and blue, were all handwritten by Edward Johnston and Graily Hewitt. The second volume of Milton, 'Paradise Regain'd', another fine heading was designed by Edward Johnston for the opening page. But to avoid the time-consuming process used for 'Paradise Lost', the initials were printed. ¶.

Leather. Zustand: Very Good. None (illustrator). A beautiful edition of Milton's famous theological poem. The first edition of this work to be printed by John Baskerville, and one of the earliest books to be printed in his innovative transitional typeface. Paradise Regain'd was composed in Milton's cottage in Chalfont St Giles in Buckinghamshire, and was based on the Gospel of Luke's version of the Temptation of Christ. The poem is four books in length, in contrast with Paradise Lost's twelve. One of the major concepts emphasised throughout Paradise Regained is the play on reversals. As implied by its title, Milton sets out to reverse the "loss" of Paradise. Thus, antonyms are often found next to each other throughout the poem, reinforcing the idea that everything that was lost in the first epic is going to be regained by the end of the mini-epic. In a beautiful crushed morocco binding with marbled boards. Externally, lovely condition although front hinge is strained. Internally, firmly bound, generally bright and clean if not for slight marginal water damage affecting first and last few pages. Very Good. book.

Eighteenth century example of Milton's masterpiece, Paradise Lost: A Poem in Twelve Books and Paradise Regain'd. Octavo, 4 volumes bound in full contemporary tree calf, gilt titles and tooling to the spine red morocco spine labels, gilt ruled, marbled endpapers, ribbons bound in, all edges speckled brown, engraved frontispiece to two volumes. In near fine condition. A desirable example. First published in 1667, â Paradise Lost is generally conceded to be one of the greatest poems in the English language; and there is no religious epic in English which measures up to Miltonâ s masterpieceâ ¦ Milton performed an artistâ s service to his Godâ (Magill, 511, 515). The writer and critic Samuel Johnson wrote that Paradise Lost shows off "[Milton's] peculiar power to astonish" and that "[Milton] seems to have been well acquainted with his own genius, and to know what it was that Nature had bestowed upon him more bountifully than upon others: the power of displaying the vast, illuminating the splendid, enforcing the awful, darkening the gloomy, and aggravating the dreadful." By 1688, when England was on the verge of the Whig revolution, Milton's reputation had revived considerably. He was commended for his republicanism as well as his record as a defender of liberty. His supporters believed that his greatest poetic achievement merited this handsome, monumental edition. One of the earliest examples of subscription publishing, financed by Lord Somers, the fourth edition of Paradise Lost was the first to be printed in folio format and is the first illustrated edition, distinguished by high quality paper, large, clear type, and ample margins. Milton had previously reorganized the poem into twelve books (by splitting Books 7 and 10 of the original) to parallel Virgil's Aeneid more closely.
