Erstausgabe
First edition. 12mo. pp xviii, 468. Period binding of full polished calf with raised bands, decorated in gilt, geometric black and gilt design on both panels. Marbled edges and endpapers. "As there is not a single line of my own in this publication, I am free from the anxiety of an author; and, as editor, I shall not only be content, but highly gratified, if (as I hope) my book shall be found to contain nothing hurtful, and much that may promote the glory of God, and the well-being of my fellow Christians." The editor does, however, promote the poems of a number of close relatives, including Thomas who by his actions brought into the language the word bowdlerize. Early ownership signatures on first blank and on title-page. Joints and corners rubbed. Very good.

4to, pp. [iv], [9]-52; title with upper outer corner missing, sympathetically replaced with similar paper; two leaves (D2 and F2) torn at foot, but with no loss; title page and last page of text a bit dust-soiled; else a good copy, recased in contemporary marbled boards, new calf spine. A scarce collection of poems by a Gloucester bookseller. Richard Bond was in business in Gloucester from the early 1750s, when he is recorded as selling the Daily Register, until about 1770. He was very likely the son of William Bond, bookseller and bookbinder in Stroud and Gloucester, and thus the brother of the composer Capel Bond (1730-90) and the painter Daniel Bond (1725-1803): in 1769 Richard seems to have published Capel Bond's music, and this book is usually catalogued has having been issued in this year. The 'Mr Bond' in Stroud who also sold this book could well be Richard Bond's father, or perhaps a brother succeeding to the father's business. The first part of the book, to p. 34, is taken up with mostly pious and divine poems - a version of the Te Deum, paraphrases of the psalms, and a poem 'The Happy Man' which is surely based on Horace's famous Ode. The latter section is entirely devoted to a single long poem titled 'Friendship, a familiar Epistle', which sings the usual praises of virtue, friendship and modesty of ambition. It ends rather charmingly: Thus writes, and thus would correspond, SIR, Your's, in Friendship, RICHARD BOND. Rare: ESTC locates just six copies, at the British Library, Bodleian and Senate House (London) in the UK; and Library of Congress, Chicago and Illinois in the USA.

4to in twos, pp. 68; complete with an errata slip pasted onto the second leaf (not mentioned by ESTC); small hole on O1 (pp. 57-8) due to a paper flaw, affecting four letters only on the verso (but the sense remains clear); in contemporary half calf, marbled boards, spine rubbed and covers dusted, some signs of use. A very rare Nottingham-printed collection of poems by a man named A. Goodrick, but about whom nothing else seems to be known - and certainly there is nothing else by him in ESTC. The prefatory advertisement is dated from Sutton-in-Ashfield, 1 March 1780, and after the principal poem ('The Nazareen') there is an elegy to Matthew Butcher of the same town, who died in 1777. We can trace Matthew, who was the son of William Butcher, a frame work knitter (d. 1768), as his father's will is recorded among the Portland papers. Rare: ESTC locates copies only at the BL, Trinity Cambridge (two) and Nottingham; Copac adds one at the National Library of Scotland, and there is also one (from the Potter collection) at Stanford. Not in Jackson, Annals of English verse.
