The 'British Enchanters' has it's own Title Page, dated 1710. The collected poems of George Granville [ 1666 - 1735 ] which Samuel Johnson liked to a bad imitation of Samuel Waller. Granville was an early patron of Alexander Pope, and as his literary ambitions was also much involved in the politics of the day. Granville & his Tory peers found the new King to be a Whig & all lost their positions. 400 grams.

8vo, pp. [viii], 267; contemporary calf, rebacked. First edition: the major book of poetry by Alexander Pope's first patron; Windsor Forest was dedicated to him the following year. Up to this point Lord Lansdowne (1667-1735) had published only a few plays; of his verse Samuel Johnson did not have a high opinion: 'He had no ambition above the imitation of Waller, of whom he has copied the faults and very little more'. Included in this volume are poems addressed to the King, epistles to various ladies (most of them addressed to 'Myra'), a number of prologues and epilogues, and verses to John Dryden and Samuel Garth; there is also a brief 'Character of Mr. Wycherley' in prose. At the end is The British Enchanters, a dramatic poem which had been acted at the Haymarket, and published in 1706. Provenance: early and rather attractive engraved armorial bookplate of Ann Lloyd, with her signature on title page, and inscription 'A Lloyd no 1013' on pastedown. If her library amounted to over a thousand books in the early 18th century, that would have been quite a substantial collection for a woman of the period. Foxon p. 314; Rothschild 1051.

Granville (1666-1735) wrote his first play, The She-Gallants, at age 15, and his adaptation of Shakespeare, The Jew of Venice, was to hold the stage for forty years, but he had also been writing poetry on the model of Edmund Waller throughout the 1680s and 90s. 8vo, pp. [ii], [v]-xvi, [ii], [9]-162, [2]; [iv], 53, [3]; plus frontispiece portrait, and withtwo other plates; contemporary panelled calf, old manuscript title and shelf labels. Bookplate of Ross Winans. First edition. The first portion of this volume consists of eight of Addison's neo-Latin poems, with English translations by Thomas Newcomb, George Sewell, and Nicholas Amhurst; included are 'The Battel of the Pygmies and Cranes', 'The Barometer: or, Weather-Glass', 'The Puppet-Show', 'The Bowling-Green', and 'The Peace of Reswick'. Samuel Johnson had mixed feelings about this sort of modern Latin verse: 'When the matter is low or scanty, a dead language, in which nothing is mean because nothing is familiar, affords a great convenience; and by the sonorous magnificence of Roman syllables, the writer conceals penury of thought, and want of novelty, often from the reader, and often from himself' (Lives of the Poets). The rest of the volume is devoted to Addison's remarks on Roman poets, with the Latin text followed by a translation by Christopher Hayes. This portion was also sold separately for a shilling, and has its own half-title and title-page, dated 1718. From various advertisements it appears that the entire volume, in fact, was available for sale by the late summer of 1718, despite the date on the first title-page. Addison died in June 1719, after a lingering illness. The frontispiece here is engraved by Vander Gucht after a portrait by Kneller; the two other plates, of Heaven and Hell, and the Resurrection, are included in the collation (the imprint of the latter is shaved). A good copy of a book which is difficult to find in acceptable condition; about half of the copies listed in the ESTC are to some degree imperfect. Foxon p. 4.

Erstausgabe
Leather. Zustand: Very Good. None (illustrator). First edition. A collection of John Milton's poetry. Containing poems in Latin and Italian, with English translations. Edited by Thomas Warton, with extensive critical notes. First thus, the first edition of this anthology edited by Warton. Comprising of hundreds of poems including odes, sonnets. Also containing his 'Comus' which was commissioned for masques for noble patrons. The editor, Thomas Warton, was a popular literary historian and critic. He was also Poet Laureate of England for five years. With the bookplate of James Franch Bright to the recto of front endpaper. Bright was a British historian and a Master of University College, Oxford. He wrote several works including English History for the Use of Public Schools and The Growth of Democracy. From the antiquarian library of Christopher Rowe. Christopher Rowe was a schoolmaster in Norwich and then in Bristol. Throughout his career he inspired many to love literature, history and music. He was a specialist on 17th century printer and bookseller, Humphrey Moseley and began his, unfortunately unfinished, PhD dissertation on him. The publication of this work received immediate praise for Warton from the 'Critical Review' and other periodicals. Many people considered this work to be the best edition of Milton's shorter poems which inspired Warton to publish a second edition including 'Paradise Lost' and 'Paradise Regained'. Unfortunately, this never came to fruition. John Milton was a seventeenth century poet, polemicist, man of letters and civil servant. His writings reflect his time of writing, which was swamped with religious flux and political upheaval. His writings were multi-lingual and tended to be in English, Latin, Greek and Italian. In a full calf binding. Rebacked with original boards preserved. Externally, smart with slight rubbing to the extremities and to the boards. Small loss to the extremities due to rubbing. A few marks to boards. Prior owner's bookplate to front pastedown, Christopher Rowe. Prior owner's bookplate to the recto of front endpaper, James Franck Bright. Ink inscription to recto of front endpaper. Prior owner's pencil notations to the margins of page 352 and 353. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are slightly age toned with light scattered spots throughout. Very Good. book.
