Leather. Zustand: Good. None (illustrator). A scarce collection of biographical sketches of seventy-one British public figures with a fold-out frontiepiece with thirty portraits. First edition. Missed by Cowie, this is the earliest appearance of a Nelson biographical reference. "In every point of view, we are warranted in concluding, that Lord Nelson has rendered a most important service to humanity by his late and decisive victory. If the hostile cabinets of Europe should prudently avail themselves of its impression upon the enemy. an honourable and glorious peace may be the happy result." He takes pride of place as the first character in the folding frontis, probably because of his recent victory at Aboukir referred to above. Some of the other notables include Lord Nelson, Mr Fox, Dr. Darwin, Lord Monboddo, Isaac D'Israeli, Mrs. Siddons, William Herschel and Joseph Priestley. It was very popular and was reprinted many times, forming the first in a series of these types of works. Very good internally but in need of rebacking for the original full calf binding. Priced accordingly to allow for this. Bound by C. Kalthoeber, London with binder's label to verso of front free endpaper. In a tree calf binding. Externally, sound but with front board detached, slight wear to extremities and spine label absent. Rear joint starting slightly. Internally, firmly bound. Bright but with the occasional handling mark and slight spotting to first and last few pages. Good. book.

pp. xxxvi, 439. 8vo. Early cloth with worn spine label. Partly unopened. Keynes 49. 'With his collected Political Essays Hazlitt ended his activities as controversial journalist. He drew upon his writings during the years 1813 - 18 and added at the end some of his "characters" of statemen first printed in the Eloquence of the British Senate, 1807, and some extracts from his Reply to Malthus, 1807. The book was entirely in fine Radical hands, being dedicated to John Hunt, printed by John M'Creery, and published by William Hone.Hazlitt's Preface is characteristically fierce, and the whole book has a strong political flavour.'.

First edition of "a fine introduction to the sharpness of Hazlitt's prose and the spice of his convictions" (ODNB), in a handsome Zaehnsdorf binding. Hazlitt ranges from broader political and literary analyses to narrower character studies of Burke, Pitt, and Fox, before concluding with a series of essays reflecting on the political economy of Thomas Malthus. This copy bears on the front pastedown the attractive 1897 bookplate of John Wilkinson Crake (c.1842-1918). Crake, a minister in Oldham, Lancashire, appropriately chooses for his bookplate a quote from one of Hazlitt's final essays (not in this collection): "Books let us go into the souls of other men, and lay open to us the secrets of our own". Keynes 49. Octavo (224 x 139 mm). Late 19th-century half morocco by Zaehnsdorf, spine with raised bands forming five compartments, lettered, ruled, and decorated in gilt, marbled paper sides and endpapers, top edge gilt. Light rubbing, slight sunning to spine and covers, toning and sporadic foxing to contents: a very good copy.

Erstausgabe
First edition of Hazlitt's collection of his political writings from the previous two decades. "With his collected Political Essays Hazlitt ended his activities as controversial journalist. Hazlitt's Preface is characteristically fierce, and the whole book has a strong political flavour" (Keynes). "Though a miscellany of previously published occasional journalism, it nevertheless offers a fine introduction to the sharpness of Hazlitt's prose and the spice of his convictions - his faith in Napoleon, his hatred for Pitt, his uneasy admiration of Burke, his dismay at the apostasy of Coleridge and Southey" (ODNB). The copy is in a publisher's remainder binding, from around the late 1820s to 1840 - Keynes notes that the book appears to have sold slowly, was still being advertised as late as the 1840s, and is found in a variety of bindings. The printed paper label advertises the price of 14 s., apparently preceding a cut to 6s. 6d. noted by Keynes. The ownership signature helfpully gives a cut-off date for issue of 1840. Keynes 49. Octavo (224 x 137 mm). Early publisher's green cloth with printed paper label, edges trimmed. Ownership signature dated 1840 to front free endpaper, light residue from removed label to front pastedown; from the collection of bibliophile Hans Fellner without being marked as such. Minor chipping around label not affecting lettering, trivial wear at extremities, joints and hinges intact, some very light foxing to contents but crisp and without marking, partly unopened towards rear. An excellent copy.
Zustand: Fair. Acceptable condition. Slight dampstaining, Some hinges cracking. Writing inside. Lot of 4 books. (History, civil War, Biography) NOT AVAILABLE FOR SHIPMENT OUTSIDE OF THE UNITED STATES.
