Leather. Zustand: Good Only. Not stated (illustrator). A scarce edition of this collection of Latin language poetry by Horace, translated by Michel Mattaire. A very scarce edition of this collection of Latin language poetry by Horace. An Ancient Roman lyric poet, Horace's work has been influential for centuries, being cited by poets such as Byron, Keats and Kipling, although his work was not always seen in a positive light. Here, his work is translated by classical scholar and bibliographer Michel Mattaire, who was well known for his Latin translations printed and published by Tonson, as seen here. In decorative calf binding with gilt detailing. Externally, there is wear to the extremities, boards and backstrip, as well as loss and starting to the backstrip. The joints and hinges are also tender. Internally, the pages are firmly bound but are foxed and spotted throughout. The text remains clear. There is also the remnants of a bookplate to pastedown and an ink inscription to endpages. Good Only. book.
