Jonathan Carver wanted to find a north-west land passage between the Atlantic and the Pacific Ocean, he penetrated farther into the West than any other English explorer before the Revolution. He travelled from Boston in 1766 to Lake Superior to the sources of the river St.Pierre, together 7000 miles. This work contains one of the earliest descriptions of what is now known as Minnesota and Wisconsin.
