A very good copy in C20 crushed green morocco, gilt, raised bands, spine and inner edges gilt, dry-stamp of Derek Gibson and pencilled date to fly. The second, revised edition of this popular work on country cottage architecture, illustrated with 27 charming hand-coloured aquatints of cottages, villas and other ornamental rural buildings, with some observations on landscape gardening. John Buonarroti Papworth (1775-1847) was a British architect, trained by John Plaw, and founding member of the Royal Institute of British Architects. One of the most versatile architects and decorative artists of the period (J. Summerson), he also designed buildings intended for Europe and the USA. First published in 1818, Rural Residences joined the recent fashion of illustrated manuals for country cottage decoration and buildings, intended both for a middle-class and land-owning readership. Papworth here stated that a small villa residence must be considered first in terms of its fitness to house a family. Next, perhaps more important [ ], was the matter of expression providing external claims of respectability . He especially appreciated the use of historical styles for their associations with particular eras and societal forms , such as the Tudor and Elizabethan styles (Archer, p.54). The preface puts the boot in on contemporary building practices, decrying the employment of speculative builders or mere building workers, instead of trained architects. The result [ ] is an obvious perversion of true architecture; and, consequently, the modern streets of London present repetitions of the same vapid elevations of mere perforated walls, that disgust the man of taste, and are too justly the theme of ridicule to foreigners. His work thus presented an introduction to the threshold of art . The designs include groups of cottages for labourers, entrance lodges adapted to garden scenery, a domestic chapel, a Gothic conservatory, an ice-house, a fishing lodge and a vicarage house. Each plate is followed by 4 pages of explanation, with reference to specific buildings. Archer 246.3; BAL 2429. L4186.

Erstausgabe
Imperial octavo, frontispiece and 26 aquatint plates, all handcoloured; nineteenth century purple half calf. In this beautifully illustrated book George Papworth (1775-1847) intended to demonstrate that even a modest cottage could be raised to a high aesthetic plane with the application of the principles of proportion and form. James Broadbent in The Australian Colonial House has traced the influence of Papworth's designs on grander Colonial works: for a palatial house Macarthur was to have built at Pyrmont, as well as some of the features of the prestigious Newington at Silverwater. This is a good copy of the first edition of Papworth's exquisite book on picturesque cottage design. Papworth, leading architect, landscaper and interior designer of his day, popularised the rustic cottages ornés through this work and in Ackermann's Repository of Arts, Literature, Fashions &c. . Joints slightly rubbed but in generally fine condition.

DAVIS, Alexander Jackson. Rural Residences, etc. Consisting of Designs, Original and Selected, for Cottages, Farm Houses, Villas, and Village Churches. Unpaginated. Content includes: Title page, advertising leaf, [16] pp. of "Specification of the Material and Work Required for Building a Dwelling House." Illustrated with 11 hand-coloured lithographed plates and 1 tinted lithographed plate, several plates with manuscript and colour pencil additions by Davis, three related plates laid in. Folio, 353 x 265 mm., loose in original untrimmed printed wrappers, preserved in a cloth folding box. New York: [For the Author], 1837. A highly desirable copy of this legendary rarity among American architecture and colour plate books. "This is without doubt one of the dozen or so rarest and most important American architectural books and as such is a cornerstone to any serious collector" (Charles Wood). Davis was one of the most successful and influential American architects of his generation, especially for his association with the Gothic Revival style. This volume contains Davis's designs for the following: American House; Farmer's House (3 plates); Cottage Orne; Villa in the Oriental Style; Gate-House in the Rustic Cottage Style; Villa in the English Collegiate Style (2 plates); Village Church; Village School-House (2 plates). Also included is an unsigned original coloured sketch of a "Simple Country House" with interior plans, probably in Davis' hand, and two woodcut engravings of homes designed by Davis (Residence of C.G. Alger, Esq., Downing Place, Hudson River & Winyah, The Residence of Col. Richard Lathers, New Rochelle, N.Y., with hand-drawn plan of the of the interior probably by Davis. It can be assumed the original drawings are by Davis, who contributed drawings to most copies. In a remarkable state of preservation despite some chipping to the wrappers and some unobtrusive foxing. PROVENANCE: From the library of William S. Reese.

Two architectural volumes on Tudor domestic architecture by Thomas Frederick Hunt, beautifully illustrated with detailed engravings throughout.
