Five volumes only of the very scarce six volume third edition of Sarah Trimmer's religious work. Very scarce in all eighteenth century editions. Lacking volume V.Trimmer's 'Sacred History' was first published between 1782 and 1785, based upon her education of her own sons. Trimmer soon became aware of the need for interesting, moral and religious texts for her children and therefore created her own.Trimmer's works were dedicated to maintaining the social and political status quo. As a high church Anglican, she was intent on promoting the Church of England and on teaching the young and the poor the doctrines of Christianity. Her writings outlined the benefits of social hierarchy, and argued that class structure was dictated by God.ESTC reference number T123205 In full calf bindings, with gilt detailing to back strips. Trimmer soon became aware of the need for interesting, moral and religious texts for her children and therefore created her own. The sixth edition of this work. Trimmer wrote many children's works and was quite the educational reformer. She founded several Sunday schools and charity schools. She was a high church Anglican and her works reflect her views. In a full calf binding with gilt stamping to the spines. Externally, generally smart. Spines have some rubbing, mainly to the head and tail. Several patches of rubbing vertically to spines. Small patches of minor rubbing to the boards and joints. Front hinge is slightly strained but firm to vol i. Internally, all volumes are firmly bound. Pages are generally bright with the odd spots throughout. Ribbon bookmarks present to all volumes. Very Good. book.
