Leather. Zustand: Very Good. Not Stated (illustrator). A comprehensive three-volume set of English poetry, rebacked in full calf. The fourth edition of this work rebacked in full calf bindings, with the original mottled calf laid down to the boards. Volume I contains chronological and alphabetical lists of the poets whose work features in these volumes; a historical sketch on language and poetry; and a selection of English poetry from the reigns of King Henry II, King Richard I, King Edward II, King Edward III, King Henry IV, King Henry V, King Henry VI and King Henry VII. Volume II contains a historical sketch; a selection of English poetry from the reigns of King Henry VIII, King Edward VI, Queen Mary and Queen Elizabeth I; and a glossary. Volume III contains a selection of English poetry from the reigns of King James I, King Charles I and King Charles II. It also contains a conclusion to and alphabetical list of the Specimens. George Ellis (1753-1815) was a Jamaican-born English antiquary, satirical poet and M.P. He is best known for this work, Specimens of the Early English Poets, and also Specimens of Early English Metrical Romances, which played an influential part in acquainting the general reading public with Middle English poetry. Rebacked in full calf, with original mottled calf laid down to the boards. Externally very smart, though somewhat rubbed to the boards, more so to Volume III. Hinges of all volumes are splitting but still firm. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are generally clean, with a scattering of spots to the first and last few pages of all volumes. Very Good. book.

Lowndes 731 (Ausg. 1805); Brunet II, 963f. - Ausgabe letzter Hand. - Papier durchgängig etwas stockfleckig, dennoch gutes Exemplar. - Copy with the bookplate of Philip Proby Cautley. Cautley is still known today as the first person to copy the Etruscan text known as the "Codex lineus" from the so-called Zagreb mummy bindings and thus made it accessible to science. - Paper somewhat foxed throughout, nevertheless a good copy.
