Cloth. Zustand: Very Good. None (illustrator). The complete Speeches of the Right Honourable Edmund Burke, complete in four volumes. In four volumes, complete. With a manuscript timeline of British political events to the rear free-endpaper of Volume I. Edmund Burke, d.1797, was an Irish statesman, author, orator, political theorist, and philosopher who, after relocating to England, served for many years in the House of Commons of the United Kingdom as a member of the Whig party. He is mainly remembered for his opposition to the French Revolution. It led to his becoming the leading figure within the conservative faction of the Whig party, which he dubbed the "Old Whigs", in opposition to the pro-French-Revolution "New Whigs" led by Charles James Fox. He is generally viewed as the philosophical founder of modern conservatism. In cloth bindings, with original publisher's boards. Externally smart. There is some wear to the extremities, including some bumping and rubbing, with loss to the cloth of the spine, as shown above. There is a neat ink signature on the front pastedown of volume 1. The front hinges are starting. Internally, generally firmly bound. Pages are generally bright with scattered spots and handling marks. There are unopened pages throughout the four volumes. Very Good. book.

Erstausgabe
4to (267 x 211mm), pp. 383; with MS note (see below) on upper free endpaper; bound in old (probably mid-19th century) half calf over marbled boards, well rebacked in modern times with a new calf spine, lettered in gilt. First edition. This biography was attacked by early writers: Lowndes calls it 'a disgraceful piece of party virulence', and an early annotator in this copy (in a long note opposite the title page) calls this 'a most infamous production of a most infamous wretch', and accuses McCormick of selling Burke's Letter to the Duke of Portland (also known as Observations on the Conduct of the Minority, 1797) which was originally meant to remain private to the booksellers. According to Todd, the text was actually passed to John Owen by William Thomas Swift, but there is no doubt that McCormick was regarded as a knave, and that he was, by early 1797, closely associated with Swift. When McCormick announced the publication of this book, on 13 February, an injunction (characterised by McCormick as 'menaces') was issued preventing its appearance, and he had to publish it himself from the offices formerly occupied by Owen before he was forced into bankruptcy. Burke died on 9 July the same year, perhaps freeing McCormick from the threat of prosecution for libel, although in fact Burke's widow continued to pursue Swift in an action of 5 August. Whatever the truth, this book was issued on 13 November. However, it cannot have sold very well, because the same sheets were reissued the following year as a 'second edition', the only alterations being the addition of a plate, and the edition statement to the title page. In this second edition the publishers became Lee and Hurst of Paternoster Row, so presumably McCormick's plan to publish it himself was unsuccessful. Lowndes p. 1434. Provenance. Offset of an early armorial bookplate on the free endpaper; inscription of Anthony H. Windrum, Wellington, 1939, bought (according a note on the rear pastedown) for 7s.6d.
