A collection of literary magazine and extracts, dating from 1734 to 1767, bound in one volume.Most of this volume consists of 'The Universal Magazine of Knowledge and Pleasure', a periodical published by John Hinton and W. Bent from 1747 to 1814.With many pieces relating to contemporary culture and politics, including discussions on the dealings of the East India Company, tide-mills, the history of England, elements of philosophy, the crimes of Francis David Stirn, and more.Illustrated with one hand-coloured plate, and one monochrome plate. Bound without all other plates.This volume includes, in binding order:'Universal Magazine', for July 1760, September 1760, and August 1761.'Gentleman's Magazine', Volume IV Number XLII, including 'Proceedings in Last Session of Parliament' and 'Weekly Essays in June 1734'.'Supplement to the Universal Magazine Volume XXXVIII'.'Universal Magazine', for March 1764, May 1764, August 1764, June 1764, September 1761, June 1761, July 1764, and May 1767. In a quarter calf binding with marbled paper to the boards. Externally, worn, with some loss of paper and leather due to rubbing. Bumping to the extremities. Light marks to the boards. Hinges are starting but firm. Ink and pencil inscription to the verso of the front endpaper. Pages are lightly age-toned with the occasional spot and handling mark. Some pages are closely trimmed to the head, resulting in loss to the running title and pagination. Puncture marks to the gutter. Pages 251 to 254 of Universal Magazine for May 1767 are detached but present. Final leaf is working loose. Good. book.

GOOD condition. Paper toned, foxed and a bit stained throughout. Remains of original binding along the spine. Paper toned. Aforementioned plate missing a large section.
